What is the biggest factor for us turning off the press?

To think that only 2 years ago we were above City and Liverpool and only 7 points off winning the title.

Then we lost half of our defence and half of our central midfield and our home got pulled down.

It's quite something that we still managed to do as well as we have.

It's worth taking into account how poor some of the heavyweight sides have been in some of these seasons.

We took 4 points off City in 16/17 for example. Although we were good, I don't think our 16/17 side would take 4 points from a City side from the last couple of seasons and last week.

We had 80% possession lol are guys wanting 90%?

That suited them perfectly though sitting with a 1 goal lead. They didn't want possession - just the scoreline.

Although I'm thinking about the press in more than just yesterdays game, there's a big difference in winning the ball back from their defensive players rather than accepting another aimless punt to our defenders around the half way line.

They clearly would not play it out from the back for us to be able to win it in a dangerous high position.
Pressing wasn't the issue yday.

As others have mentioned, it’s not necessarily the press - we won the ball back countless times yesterday. It’s just we didn’t know what to do with it in the end.

The difference between our creative play now and a couple of years ago is stark. One obvious problem is that we have lost the dynamic Walker-Rose partnership on the flanks. They had the pace and dynamism to cause problems on the wings allowing our creative players to come inside, interchange and and occupy dangerous spaces. We’ve lost that totally.

We’ve also lost Dembeles ability to beat a man and break the opposition lines thus allowing Eriksen, Son etc to receive the ball in dangerous areas. Whilst Ndombele has looked good, it will take him time to get to prime-Dembele level.

We are now heavily relying on Ndombele, Lo Celso and Sessegnon to come good and quickly as they play in all the positions where we’re suffering, full back, midfield and creative attacking mid. If they adapt quickly I can see yesterday’s loss being a blip but if they don’t its upto Poch to come up with something new as we’re going to have the problem of teams sitting deep week in, week out. We actually look set up to do better away from home than at home at the moment.

2018/19 - 8 losses, 2 draws, 6 wins. The most losses we've had under Poch at the end of a season.

So that's 5 seasons and we've finished like shit in 3 of them, incredible in 1 and well in 1 of them. We're definitely not a team that consistently ends a season well, but for me to say never was an exaggeration.

The results speak for themselves, but how the hell does being knocked out of the cups in the last 2 months of the season rank worse than getting knocked out in earlier stages?
