If they are walking and running well ahead of schedule, its a good indication they will be back before 'the usual 6 months minimum' which is an average - and average is over both minor and more major injuries.
So the 'usual' might be a decent first guess. But once the healing process starts, it becomes more apparent how minor or major the injury was from how quickly player gets to certain stages (eg walking or running) - and then adjust expectations for return date.
