I don’t think all that much of him. I do think going from this city team to us (17th now 14th) would be a strange decision barring huge financial incentive.
Wasn't Haaland a buy out clause as well?
I think it pretty much boiled down to who he wanted to go to, and City offered him a ridiculous wage, which they've since increased, I believe.
I make you right on the last bit though, where a buy out isn't part of the deal, which is why we've tended to struggle to secure high end players early. We've always tried to get value on both transfer fee and wages, which always leaves us open to be blown out of the water. Couple them with the ridiculous fees that agents demand for themselves, then we've always been at a disadvantage due to our previous approach.
Until we match the stupidity, or is it calculated inflation, of these bankrolled, or outright cheating (or both), clubs, we'll always be playing second fiddle. Particularly when you know that the PL will come down on us like the wrath of God if they got a sniff we might be bending the rules.
Maybe clubs don't like their players being unsettled throughout the season with offers or queries, so it's not against the rules but perhaps poor etiquette. And it seems as soon as a club talks to a player's agent, the agent tells the world because they want to create a market with other clubs bidding and gazumping. So it only really works if the selling club agrees not to look at other offers. Maybe the buying club offers to play up in fewer instalments or something as a way of keeping the selling club on side.

I don't know about his initial contract but apparently he signed a new 9.5 year contract last season which removes any exit clause that may have previously existed, with City until 2034.
