That's not really true, though. Bergvall was our player of the year playing almost all his minutes as a CM not a 10, and he's been pretty shocking as a 10 under Frank - that position really doesn't play to his strengths. Xavi's been a disappointment so far but he's still miles better than Bergvall as a 10 imo. If anything we've dropped Bergvall for Palhinha/Gray.

Frank clearly doesn't trust Bergvall deeper as he's a bit of a maverick and not that positionally disciplined. We need to get him games playing deeper, though, as it's his best position and he was brilliant much of last season.

Bergvall could crush it at the 6 for us so hard- he has a mean streak in him and will square up to anybody. I agree that Frank is totally blowing it playing him at the 10 though. Its weird but Bergvall is even a better LM/RM than he is a CAM.

think hes a few years away from having the discipline to play deeper, right now hes a free spirit, he needs to be high and just play off the cuff.

which is perfect to play just behind the striker, for now.

xavi has been pony, hes weak and lacks the ability to make up for it.

i dont think bergvall would be the long term answer, as he is very raw, but he would of done more for us this season playing there instead of xavi. could have waited to use that money on something more of a sure thing, not a gamble on a feeble player.
Nah I just think Bergvall is simply quite bad as a 10 at everything except running around. Bergvall's best qualities are his engine, wriggling out of pressure, being a nuisance off the ball and carrying the ball up field - basically exactly what you want from a box-to-box midfielder. He's not creative, short passing pretty wayward, basically just runs around like a headless chicken at 10. Might score the odd goal box-crashing but that's about it, really.

Xavi is clearly a natural 10: way more creative and has a decent shot on him. He does the occasional absolutely braindead pass to nobody but the majority of his passes are better than Bergvall's.

I'm not saying Xavi has been good or anything but as a profile fit he's so clearly an actual 10 compared to Bergvall. We'd be much better off persevering with Xavi in that position rather than pretending Bergvall is something he's not.

And I really hope Frank is working with Bergvall in training with an eye to playing him as a CM long term cos he's never gonna be a top 10 or at his best playing off the left.

Agree Xavi is absolutely a natural 10 compared to Bergvall.

I do think Bergvall has better passing than you give him credit for- as with RKM, he plays alongside a bunch of other selfish boobs (our other players) that rarely use the ball well.

I find his short passing and decision making to be one of his big weaknesses, really. He's not terrible and does some really lovely flicks and backheels sometimes, but it's quite common we're on the break or in a promising position, and he'll make a simple pass a few yards behind a runner, killing all momentum, or pick the wrong option.

I'd say it's an area of his game that's just average and needs to be worked on. Since he's only 19 he's got plenty of time to improve it, thankfully.

But anyway sorry this isn't the Bergvall thread so should probably get back on topic.

Maybe, but I reckon his skill will shine as the chemistry improves. I'm an optimist though. I think, more than most, he needs confidence and chemistry. A good LW will help massively. Get a Dutch one!
Yeah he might end up being another big money flop, but there are glimpses there with Xavi.

Some players really do take a full season to adapt to the PL and it's pretty obvious our style of play isn't remotely suited to him. I suspect he'd do better under another manager - if Chelsea had signed him, their possession game would've no doubt suited him a lot better and I think he'd have far more goals and assists by now.

When you invest that much money in a player you gotta give them time before you write them off. For me the jury's still out.

What about.....

ok, fuck it I'm just going to say it.....

What about James Garner?
