My immediate feeling with Muani Mateta (edit) is that Richarlison is similar but much better

And I think its fairly well agreed we need to do better than Richarlison

And while people dont rate Solanke, I think he is showing (immediately) he is a considerably better footballer than both

So, if we are buying a striker, that player needs to raise the level, not pad out the bottom end of quality we have

I would much prefer we just get someone who is real quality, that would be my first choice

In the event we cant, and its a choice between the like of Mateta or not - I choose not. I think theres more value in promoting youth, be that Tel/Lankshear/Scarlett - long term thats better IMO
Scarlett is not good enough to play for us. Lankshear will prove to be the same. I’d love to have a youth player that breaks through but we can’t have this fantastical idea that these guys will be able to get into our team. We won’t to be better than we are so we need be realistic. I’ll guarantee everyone that Scarlett and Lankshear never start a league game for us.

I get all that, and nothing rationally I would disagree with.

Just not sure if the youth is good enough but with you that we need to be raising and not levelling the bar.

I'm stumped

I mentioned Freedman the other day

Saw a rumour/tweet that said when Amanda Stavely was looking to take over she was planning to bring Frrdman in with her

He did an EXCELLENT job at Palace

I wonder what he could do with a club like ours. A lot like managers I think theres a question of whether or not a DoF can scale up.

Can he swim in deeper waters....
......or can he sell sand to an Arab, either way he'd do a damn sight better than the incumbents.

You may be right - my point isnt that I think theyre amazing, its simply that Id rather give them a chance that piss money away on Mateta

The little Ive seen of Lankshear - I think he might have something

Scarlett Ive never been sold on

I'm probably in the minority in that I would not be against Mateta.

Big strong 9s are back in vogue within football and there are multiple systems where he can do well.

You're not a bad player if you have scored 56 goals for a PL club.

Mateta and Sterling no thanks - would be amazed if either rumour is true tbh, they can't be that stupid.
Robertson I can understand.

I suspect we still want him but getting him will be like pushing a boulder up a hill. Frimpong went off injured last night, are they really going to want to sell another defender now?

If we dont get him, then I do want us to get another left back but not any old rubbish.

I wouldn’t mind Mateta at all. In fact I think he’s ideal to help get us out of the relegation danger we have currently. You can look to the future as much as you like but it will be harder to recruit players if we slide into the Championship. Muani has only performed in the CL and even there only against his parent club and former club. I’d rather have a proven Premier League striker any day of the week. I guarantee if he goes to Forest and we don’t sign any goalscoring striker they will finish above us. A steal at 35m.

If you add up all the £20m-£35m players we have bought in the last few years, who haven't gone on to do much for us, because at those prices with today's values, they are just bang-average Prem players, we would have been better lumping the money together to buy less, but better, players. I hope all these rumours are not true, as we seem to be sniffing around players of that type of value again. We won't improve the first team by buying more of the same.

Being in the CL is a pull, so get rid of Frank, get in someone who the players would respect and who would attract top players, then spend the money on quality, not quantity. I think that the summer transfer window, with a new manager, is going to be what we now have to wait for.

I could be wrong but I think the incompatibility factor of pursuing those top, top £70-100m + players is the wages they would demand which would upset the apple cart and have other players at the club subsequently demanding higher wages which ends up being unaffordable.
