It's actually incredible when you look at their history, arguably our most sensible signing of all time:

Jan Vertonghen
Germinal Beerschot - 2000-2003
Ajax 2003-2012

Toby Alderweireld
Germinal Beerschot - 1999-2004
Ajax 2004-2013

They have known each other and basically played together for 12 years, since Toby was 10 years old, they are probably as close as brothers

Toby will be 29 next month .... if we can sell him for stupid money in the summer we probably should .... he's for sure one of the best defenders in the EPL but he's not irreplaceable .... of course we all hope he stays and signs a new contract but if he wants a big pay-day to finish his career then good luck to him .... having said that I fully expect him to start against Juve, we will be playing not to lose in this one .....

What? Why would we intentionally lose our best defender when we are pushing for silverware and PL in the next years? If we can hold on to Toby we should be doing it at any cost because he is the kind of player we can't just go out and buy, unreal next to Vertonghen and the reason we have had the best defensive record for the past few seasons. Just because we've done well without him for a while doesn't mean he is suddenly surplus to requirements!

Such an un necessary argument, we're all spurs here lads. Your squabbling like them cunts down the road after an away loss! Belittling someone over the internet to make yourself feel superior "oh I'm a trueeee supporter, much more of a supporter then you are! Your a moaner, bla bla bla" put a sock in it lads

Struggling to understand how this guy has gone from our clear best defender, up there with Ledley, to being injured, having some Twitter gossip about his contract situation and it’s now all “he’s old, injury prone and not much better than the other guys, get him sold”.

And a lot of “he should go if he doesn’t want to sign”. We don’t know what the discussions have been. We don’t know how big a decision this is for the guy. Yet, we seem quick to assume he’s a greedy money grabber.

Trying to please football fans? Not easy....

That’s what annoys me - Levy has built this empire, but is also going to burn it down with his moronic stance on wages.

He’s reaping the benefits of the Premier League tv and Champions League money without investing it into the players who generate it - this labelling anybody who won’t blindly commit to the ‘project’ for a relative pittance as a mercenary is cringeworthy.

Alderweireld has been grossly underpaid for the past 3 years here, and is entitled to insist on being compensated for that in his next (and final) big contract; world class players should earn world class money.

The work that’s been done up to this point is beautiful and romantic, but needs a dose of reality if it is to be sustained - the majority of Pochettino’s first 11 would walk into every other team in the league and most in Europe too, and be paid 3 times as much as they are now; Eriksen, Alli and Kane won’t neutralise their true earning/silverware potential for a place on the alter of moral superiority.

Roma are a fine example of how to run a club - they rewarded/compensated Totti and De Rossi for their loyalty with elite salaries, and Levy should do the same with the fellas who’re making this dream a reality.
The term “grossly underpaid” is fucking insulting. He’s not saving lives.

Also anyone acting all outraged about our players being so “unfairly” paid need to remember that they all signed contracts agreeing to those wages. They didn’t have to.
