Tottenham Hotspur host Liverpool at White Hart Lane on Sunday 16th December 2013 (KO 16:00) in the 16th round of matches in the 2013-14 Premier League season.

Tottenham come into the match in 6th place on 27 points, while Liverpool are in 2nd place on 30 points.

This will be the 165th time the two clubs have met.

The first meeting came on Boxing Day in 1894 when Liverpool, who had been established just two years earlier after a dispute with Everton, played a friendly at Tottenham Marshes in a game won 3-0 by Spurs. A further visit from Liverpool was even less successful in Easter 1895 with Spurs winning 6-0.

The first Football League meeting between the two clubs took place at White Hart Lane in November 1909 with Spurs winning 1-0 thanks to a Bert Middlemiss goal. He became the first Spurs player to score against both Merseyside clubs.

The reverse fixture that season was won by Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield, which had previously been the home of Everton before their move to Goodison Park.

All 139 League meetings played to date between Spurs & Liverpool have taken place in the Top Flight of English football.

Tottenham's 2-1 First Division win at Anfield in March 1912 would be their last at the ground for 73 years with the jinx finally being broken by a Garth Crooks goal in 1-0 win in March 1985.

The first FA Cup meeting came in the 5th Round in March 1968 and resulted in a 1-1 draw at the Lane. Liverpool won the replay 2-1.

To date, the clubs have met 7 times in the competition with Tottenham's only win coming at Anfield in the 6th Round in March 1995 when goals from Teddy Sheringham and Jurgen Klinsmann earned a 2-1 victory.

The teams first met in the Football League Cup in 1972 and have played 7 times in the competition with Spurs winning four games with two draws.

Liverpool's only win came in the 1982 Final at Wembley which was won 3-1 after extra time. Steve Archibald put Spurs ahead but Ronnie Whelan's brace and a goal from Ian Rush ensured that the Reds lifted the silverware.

The teams contested the Charity Shield in August that year with League Champions Liverpool beating FA Cup Winners Spurs 1-0.

Liverpool are one of three English clubs Spurs have played in European Competitions to date - the other being Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Spurs beat Liverpool in the 1973 UEFA Cup Semi-Final 2-1 with a brace of goals from Martin Peters but a 1-0 win to Liverpool in the second leg at Anfield meant that the Reds progressed to the Final on the away goals rule.

Two matches were played in Swaziland in June 1984 reulting in a 5-2 win for Liverpool and a 1-1 draw.

In December 1985 and January 1986 the clubs met in the Screen Sport Super Cup - a competition played due to English club's being barred from European competition - with Liverpool winning both matches 2-0.

Both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were founder-members of the Premier League in season 1992-93 and are two of the seven clubs who have been ever-present in the competition for the past 22 seasons (Woolwich, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United are the other five).

The home fixture at White Hart Lane in November 2010 resulted in a 2-1 win for Spurs. Liverpool went ahead just before halftime with a goal from Martin Skrtel but Spurs came back in the second half with an own goal from Skrtel after 65 minutes and an injury-time winner from Aaron Lennon.

The reverse fixture at Anfield in May 2011 proved to be the UEFA Europa League decider with Spurs winning 2-0 with goals from Rafael van der Vaart and a Luka Modric penalty.

The game at White Hart Lane in September 2011 was won 4-0 by Spurs with goals from Luka Modric, Jermain Defoe and a brace from new loan signing Emmanuel Adebayor. Liverpool had both Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel sent-off. The match at Anfield in February 2012 finished in a goalless draw, as did a tour match played in Baltimore, USA in July 2012.

Tottenham beat Liverpool in November 2012 at White Hart Lane 2-1. Aaron Lennon put Spurs ahead after 7 minutes and Gareth Bale added a second 9 minutes later from a free kick. In the second half, Bale deflected into his own net after 72 minutes.

Luis Suarez put Liverpool ahead at Anfield in March 2013 after 21 minutes but Jan Vertonghen equalised just before half-time. The Belgian defender put Spurs ahead eight minutes into the second half before Stuart Downing leveled things in the 66th minute. An 82nd minute Steven Gerrard penalty ensured that all three points went to Liverpool

Tottenham have won 13 of the 42 Premier League matches played so far with Liverpool on 18 wins and 11 games drawn.

Overall, Liverpool have the upper hand over Spurs with 74 wins to 49 with 41 of the 164 matches played so far drawn.

I'm thinking he'll go all out for the Yoof... we can't be caught at the top, and Anji have already qualified (haven't they) so it's not like it'll be disrespectful to Tromso or Sheriff...
Should be an enjoyable night out, what with the next two home games coming up within the week!!!

(wow, just thought, that's 3 home games on the spin, is that some kinda all-time record and will NEVER be allowed to happen again if the results dare go well for us!)

3rd string side for the europa game though. Although our youth team would probably get us a better result than our first 11.

I think we all know AVB will still put out a strong side. I only hope he doesnt use players certain to start against Liverpool.

Id be happy to see Adebayor, Lamela and Townsend in and getting up to speed, but Ill be fucking mad if Demebele, Paulinho, Vertonghen etc play

Honestly, for this one, I really think he'll make an exception...

I can see the likes of Bentelab, Fredericks, Archer (in goal if Gomes isn't allowed!) and Da Shaq all getting a chance...

Id love to see that, I really would - but given AVBs MO to date it falls firmly into "Believe it when I see it" territory for me.

I think he has a tendency to over do it.

ABD - anyone but Dawson

Rest of the team picks itself apart from Lamela in for Chadli who's been painfully average in his last 2 cameos

Actually I'd like to see Dawson play and therefore be rested for Liverpool, injuries providing.

Where is Danny Rose? Seriously, what's wrong with him? I thought he hurt his toe. I've seen players with broken legs come back quicker. It's getting ridiculous now.

If Rose is fit(ish), he needs to play some part to build up his match fitness in order to start against Liverpool. But I doubt we'll even see his name anywhere near either team sheet!

Against Liverpool - Sandro needs to play, and I'd like to see Defoe start again. Give him one more game, then he can't see he didn't get a fair pop up top. Don't think this is one for Lamela. Lennon, Chadli & Townsend offer us plenty of options out wide.

The silence surrounding Danny Rose is worrying.. Not even a picture of him training or any word about when he will be back.
The whole club knows that having him out is a major problem for us but no one is saying how he's doing.

I reckon it's more than just a toe injury.

I would have Chiriches and Vertonghen play centre back...both are far quicker than Dawson and Suarez, like Aguero, loves playing against cumbersome defenders.

I'm delighted Sturridge is injured for this. Without him and Gerrard, as looks likely, I think Liverpool take on an average appearance, save for the buck toothed fuck face.

Agree. Even if we'd cut his toe off he wouldn't have been injured this long. It's not possible.

I reckon we start Dawson, purely to two foot Suarez in the face. I fancy our 10 men to beat their 11 with no Suarez, Sturridge or Gerrard.

I think Sturridge and Gerrard missing is certainly a plus (although Sturridge was missing on Saturday, and it certainly didn't hinder Suarez much!)

I'm prepared for all the pre-match clichés about Suarez having scored more on his own this season, than our entire strike-force has EVER in the history of football... but that's 'cos Suarez is currently on fire... and Soldado/Defoe aren't... we all know that, but surely that has to change soon?
Sunday would be nice!

It seems to me the club are being quiet for a reason.. Whether it's down to family issues or Gambling or Drug addiction. As you say, no toe injury would keep him out this long.
We would have had regular updates on his progress but nothing..Strange..

Re Rose, we have had an update, AVB said he had a setback re his quad muscle. I've posted this before, but obviously no-one reads my posts, huff, huff :)

The reason he hasn't been featured in training pix is because he hasn't been training, it really is quite straightforward.
According to AVB, he will be training this week, so we can expect to see him in said pictures.

Maybe he will be on the bench v Pool, and play v West Ham, I sure hope so re the latter.
