It seemed to me like you were trying to say that millennials so to speak have come a long way from the violent past of football, id much rather risk getting a black eye back in the 80's or 90's for gobbing off to a rival fan than getting stabbed for my Phone coming home from a game, any way going way off point now!

Nah, plenty of violent young people. We've come a long way when it comes to football hooliganism/violence because serious measures were taken. There's still a shit load in other areas & we need to do a lot of work on that as well.

No generation is instrinsically more or less violent than the last.

T'was only a joke. Attempting an arrest in those circumstances would be a bad idea.

I'd try and get the fuck out of there, if possible. If not then I'd use common law and defend myself. I have no issue with people defending themselves from violence, I do have an issue with people instigating it.

Yeah that was a big one , granted even more so considering they bottled the original just I think with them being so many points clear at the top a win for them Sunday and i cant see them not winning the league

So if a mob comes in from West Ham for example intent to cause violence, you are now saying that Spurs lads that act purely out of defense aren't neanderthals? They are just acting in common law?

So Spurs lads acting purely in defense on their own manor to say defend a pub from West Ham are well within their rights to do so?

See how this gets trickier than simply "Well they are all neanderthals and should be locked up"

If you knew anything about hooligans or hooligan culture you would know that most of the time people weren't neccessarily out to cause aggro (sometimes that was the intent) but they landed on somebody's plot and got jumped or whatever and were then simply resorting to defending themselves.

As I said earlier and hit the nail smack on the head, you don't know anything about it as you weren't there and it was a very different time.

But to end this and in agreement with you, Yes, we have mostly moved on and that's a good thing.
 
Don't get me wrong, I'm very pleased that you can go to a game these days with very little chance of being attacked. It was a very different culture back then and if you went to an away game you were fair game. That's why Spurs chaps of that era are still close today, you had to be able to rely on each other when you were in the frozen wastelands of the North.

That comment referred to people who go to football games specifically for violence. It doesn't refer to people who defend themselves from violence.

As for your hypothetical, if it was in self defence then yes. It would be for the courts to decide whether that was the case or whether they were encouraging it/happy to be a part of the violence.

And yeah, it's good we can agree there's been progress. My overarching point is just that if you go in to football games wanting violence to happen then you've got issues, especially when families are going to these games. I don't hope Spurs fans batter Woolwich fans, I'd rather we just beat them on the pitch, out-sing them and everyone goes home happy & healthy .. I'm sure everyone on here feels the same way.

Fight or flee are both viable options depending on one's physical prowess or disposition...... However, neither are a reflection on the individual making the unprovoked attack.

(FWIW, I wouldn't cast someone as a "neanderthal" simply for defending themself from an unprovoked attack.... )

I've attended football matches for 4 decades and never once had someone walk up to me and punch me without provocation and I doubt that's intrinsically linked to my upbringing..... Especially since the hooli stuff had quietened down a huge amount by the early 90s. I accept that things are different now, but in doing so I would suggest that these days if one is commonly embroiled in pre and post match fights then they are absolutely seeking confrontation to some degree.

Yeah that's crazy. Ditto the idea this generation are more knife happy. Dreadful issues I've read about Glasgow razor and knife gangs in the late 50's 60"s. Not a lot of talking through your differences in Peaky Blinders. This is the human condition and the weird urge to turn everything into a wedge issue is just so internet 🙄

Batter the twats on and off the pitch so that when they do go home, they don’t know if the physical pain from their beatings or the mental pain of their loss is worse.
