Bit of a controversial one probably but I think Ben Davies has to fall into this category, not so much because he has been fantastic, but because he has been a solid performer for a number of years and was very much a bit part player in the deal between us and Swansea. Don't think anybody had a second thought about the bloke when he arrived but has turned out to be important for us over the years.

Not sure if toxic positivity, or positively toxic?
A spin on the Which player did worse than you expected thread. Only this time we are turning it around.

Name a player that you were not sold on upon arrival, but who has overcome or dare I say blown away your expectations of them.

A simple first choice: Dele Alli. When we bought him from MK Dons I was expecting a kid to warm the bench or a long term project that would go out on loan for a season or two. Instead he was nailed on for the starting 11 almost from the word go.

Your turn.

Probably the best example of recent times imo, wondered why we were bothering putting all that effort into hijacking his Southampton move.

For a brief spell I guess Wanyama too, didn't think he was required given Dier was doing well in the role at the time, but he was immense that 1st season.
The Wanyama / Dembele pivot was the best CM pairing in the Prem that season - we were so good

I'd add this guy to my list, simply because of the fact he was so highly rated as a kid and after his loans etc. I thought it was never going to work out for him due to his physique.

Ended up an England player and maybe would have kicked on a bit apart from horrendous luck with injuries before he went to get more playing time and then the disaster I still can barely bear to think about at Hull. Gets far too much stick from some IMO.

This is a great article I've not seen linked here before...

Gedson

I thought he would be shockingly shit and he has only been a little bit shit

As for the OP - Toby from the recent crop of signings - absolutely first class defender

Same goes for Modric- feared he was an over-hyped 'tiny dancer' (oh yes - I went there) - sheer class (possibly one of ENIC's Top 5 best signings and surprise, surprise - came during time of DOF

Watching old games I saw a game between Spurs and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the mid-80s that I was almost certainly at.
Playing up front for Spurs was David Leworthy ... total blank, I have no memory of him at all.
He won a young player award at a Supporters' Club do back then. IIRC, he was a purchase from a non league club and was quite a prolific goal scorer at that level. Obviously, that was his level, he never made it for us.

Currently its got to be Son, never heard of him when he came along and boy has he become a superstar
That’s a fair point , his first season he frustrated me so much, and I’m ashamed to admit I would have been happy for him to go , but just goes to show some players take longer to adjust to the team and league

Dele........ Thought he was going to be another 'one for the future' that 6 months later you never hear from again. We've had a few 'Wonder kids' that have gone on to do absolutely nothing and I feared he'd be another.

Trippier.
Sold Walker for 50m, got Tripps for 5m. Was excellent in our system and provided plenty of goal assists.
Then we sold him for 22m, whichpretty much covered his fee and salary for his time at the club. Hats off to Levy on that one!!

Kane
I still remember the the meme's when we had 'no choice' but to play this kid. Slow, chubby, couldn't even get in the Norwich team; we all begged for Adebeyor to come back from his voodoo curse.

Eriksen
After we missed out on Moutinho, did anyone really expect the 'cut price, bargain basement' midfielder to be the top 3 performing midfielder in the EPL for 4 seasons straight? Providing key contributions to most of our goals and barely missing a single game through injury.

Lamela
Oh sorry. Wrong thread.

Carrick. I thought he'd be all right but he really impressed. Always remember him in a Woolwich away game - bossed it and we should have beaten those cunts.

Wanyama obviously. Crying shame - why can't we have a dominant DM for more than a year or two? Cursed position
