Player Xavi Simons

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I would have just whacked and hoofed it up the pitch.

Which VdV, could and should have done.

VdV had time to collect the ball, try and shield it, but hoofing it was far to difficult and didn't have enough time, he had a good few seconds to whack it.

Why is he even passing it back to VdV to begin with? Explain?

Esp, with a player pressing and chasing the ball, and in that dangerous area, AND all space open behind him? Isn't he supposed to be the player who drives us forward?

If we're talking about the pass back from xavi then VDV had hardly no time, caciedo was on him very quick. Yes he could have shielded the ball but he tried to cut inside and failed but he had a split second to make a decision.

When he got the ball the first time he should have cleared it but these players are told now to play out from the back.

Players know not to lose the ball there from the age of 10.

I don't care what they are told. You cannot lose the ball there. Shit happens but it's more on the player losing the ball.

Why didn't VdV play the ball in to space for Xavi to run on to in the first place? Why play to his feet, when there was space to for Xavi to run into and start a counter attack? Like any half decent side does.

It was just a cluster-fuck of errors and poor decisions from, Djed, Xavi, and VdV.

I am not absolving Xavi of any blame, just that he was not solely to blame for the cluster-fuck, and to me people seem to singling him out unfairly.

And that is another massive problem at Spurs, we always seem to play the ball to feet... Got the fastest player in the league? Play to feet who, wants to play a ball for the fastest player in the league (not referring to anyone) to run on to and use his pace rinsing defenders and opposition.

I haven't watched any replays as there's nothing much in it for me.
But from my seat, it felt like a totally avoidable team catastrophe where one player after another had the opportunity to fix the developing problem and didn't.
Xavi, rightly or wrongly, clearly told VDV he didn't want the ball. Mickey passed it to him anyway. Xavi had nowhere to go other than risk turning into trouble or into his wrong foot towards the touchline, so he under hit it back - which is when Mickey should have hammered it away.

It was a complete clusterfuck which reflected badly on all players involved and, it has to said, the coaching of them. They are all terrified of the ball and then take ridiculous risks on it.

They need a crisis meeting to all commit to having g faith in each other and being "predictable to each other".

He only lost the ball because the back pass was hit softly and caciedo was on him in a flash. I dont blame VDV at all.
That's insane to not blame him at all.

Imagine every underhit pass that still reached the center back resulted in a goal.

"Hey lads, if you receive an underhit pass, just do whatever you want with it, who cares if you lose it, it's not your fault."

The lack of logic is mental.

He’s been a disaster so far. The PL is hard to adjust to for imports at the moment and there is no shame in finding it hard. Referees are letting defenders plough through creative players and waving play on. It’s one of the reasons that the football had become so prosaic all through the league.

I still expect him to be able to make basic 5 or 10 yard passes though. He looks like he’s shitting himself every time he gets the ball.

I agree generally- wish the refereeing in the PL protected attacking players a bit more. Xavi could learn a lot about this from Maddison, who has been kicked terribly throughout his career, but has also developed a style of play able to break down PL deep blocks with decent regularity.

Nobody expects Palhinha to be breaking the lines ?

It's the ten as well as the 8, if playing a three, who's more responsible for that.

Not sure why Palhinha is being singled out when he's a pure DM

Even Bentancur in the double pivot has more in his skill set to break lines.

I mean the overall point is correct but the player they're singling out isn't

I know, point still stands about Xavi.

Backwards too often IMO.
