Whilst the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United have been throwing their money around like confetti at a wedding this summer, Tottenham have so far kept their powder dry on the transfer front.

Whether this is down to the cost of building their new stadium, Daniel Levy keeping a tight hold of the purse strings in an inflated market or Mauricio Pochettino not wanting to upset the balance of his squad is open to debate.

Whatever the real reason behind this lack of activity, however, two or three fresh faces would certainly be welcomed by the supporters as they look to cheer their side on to Premier League glory in the 2017/18 campaign.

In light of the big-money signings at Tottenham’s rivals this summer it will certainly be worth keeping an eye on the early season odds and betting tips at sites like KickOff to see what extent Spurs are fancied for the title.

Getting the players that you want can undoubtedly prove challenging, but which three key positions should Spurs be focusing on in terms of their transfer strategy?

RIGHT-BACK

Following the departure of Kyle Walker for an eye-watering initial fee of £45m, the club have put their faith in Kieran Trippier by rewarding him with a new five-year contract.

The 26-year-old cannot be expected to shoulder the load on his own, however, particularly given Pochettino’s willingness to rotate his full-backs and to switch between three and four-man defences.

Much is expected of young Kyle Walker-Peters going forward, but it is important to remember that he has not yet made his competitive debut for the North London outfit.

Southampton’s Cedric Soares would offer Premier League experience at a reasonable price and he would probably be a more sensible buy than someone like Bayer Leverkusen’s Benjamin Henrichs:

WINGER

No team in the English top-flight has conceded fewer goals than Tottenham over the course of the last couple of campaigns, ensuring that they are competitive in virtually every game that they play.

Despite the brilliance of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Heung-Min Son in the final-third of the pitch, however, what Pochettino’s men really lack is a wide player with the individual ability to break through packed defences in the style of a David Ginola.

Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez has that in spades, as does Christian Pulisic at Borussia Dortmund, though it would take all of the money received from Walker’s move to Manchester City to stand any chance of acquiring one of this talented pair:

STRIKER

If Tottenham supporters had not realised it already, Vincent Janssen is clearly not up to the job of partnering Kane in attack, let alone stepping in for him when he is unavailable.

The Netherlands international marked his debut Premier League campaign by scoring just twice in 27 appearances, with one of those goals coming from the penalty spot.

Someone like the energetic Timo Werner at RB Leipzig would be a far better fit for the way in which Spurs play their football, though his German employers are unlikely to want to part with a player who netted 21 Bundesliga goals last season:

Alternatively, 19-year-old Kasper Dolberg, a man who scored 22 times across 42 Eredivisie and Europa League matches for Ajax in 2016/17, could be a more realistic target.
