Tottenham Hotspur hit a rocky patch in the Premier League to start the season. Although they have collected five points from 12 possible, the squad appears to be experiencing a hangover from last season’s Champions League Final loss to Liverpool. The Champions League group stage will kick off with Tottenham Hotspur against Olympiacos, and supporters are gearing up for another deep run in the competition. Compounding Spurs’ stuttering play has been injuries. Fortunately, Harry Kane hasn’t been hit with another ankle injury, but the likes of Dele Alli, Ryan Sessegnon, and now Giovani Lo Celso have experienced health issues.

Six players are currently listed as injured for Tottenham Hotspur. Champions League group stage football is just around the corner and Spurs are in dire need of points in the Premier League. The squad will be stretched thin in the coming weeks and will manager Mauricio Pochettino be able to handle the mounting player injuries?

Alli in, Lo Celso out

If there is one thing Pochettino has had to get good at during his time as Tottenham Hotspur manager, it is juggling injuries and still getting results. Tottenham played their first three Premier League matches without Alli. He only just made his return to the team playing 28 minutes in the North London Derby. Alli’s return has come at the perfect time as summer transfer signing Lo Celso returned from the international break with a groin injury. Lo Celso will miss six weeks of action and won’t return until late October. While some may believe the time out will give Lo Celso the chance to bed-in to the team better (he has played less the 40 total Premier League minutes), the fact is, his absence will give Pochettino one less attacking player to put on the pitch.

The walking wounded

Lo Celso isn’t the only Spurs’ summer signing suffering from an injury. Midfielder Tanguy Ndombele has a thigh issue and despite going through on-pitch recovery and rehab for a “minor” injury, he isn’t available. Tottenham will play Crystal Palace at the weekend and Ndombele will miss his third straight match.

Sessegnon suffered a hamstring injury over the summer on international duty. He is also recovering but will not be fit for the weekend. Juan Foyth, Eric Walker-Peters, and Eric Dier are also suffering from injuries. Walker-Peters and Dier could return for the weekend and the start of the Champions League campaign against Olympiacos.

Can Pochettino cope with injuries?

The number of injuries in the Premier League this season can be partly blamed on two things. The number of international matches has increased as the summer saw the UEFA Nations League, UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying, Gold Cup, and Copa America all take place. Players are playing too much football. Add in the Premier League’s early start and it is surprising more players are not struggling with pulled or torn muscles.

Pochettino has faced injury issues and player shortages since the day he arrived at the club. He has been able to navigate tricky waters previously and can do it once more. Tottenham Hotspur returns to Premier League play against a very stubborn Crystal Palace team. The Eagles have taken seven points from 12 possible and sit in the top four. Spurs will have their work cut out for them and the players available will need to step up with fixtures coming fast a furious over the next month.
