Harry Kane is one of the most prominent players of the English Premier League, with a well-earned global reputation as a prolific striker. As we re-enter the 2019-20 season after the forced hiatus, Kane’s stats as a top goal-scorer are undeniable. In the EPL, he comes in thirteenth for the most goals scored since the league began. For the English national team he has racked up 32 goals, putting him as sixth all-time top goal scorer for England.

It wasn’t always so for Kane. His FIFA 14 stats give him a total score of just 68, with his individual shooting numbers looking decidedly average. So, how did the young player rise from relative obscurity to EPL top scorer and England captain, with a FIFA 19 score of 90, within the space of just a few seasons?

Harry’s History

Ironically enough, Kane’s youth career started in Arsenal’s academy when he was just eight years old. Released after one season, he finally joined Tottenham’s youth team at the age of eleven. At 16 he got a scholarship contract with the club, scoring 18 goals for the under-18 side in the 2009-10 season. Arsenal’s loss, to be sure.

Impressed with his performance, the bosses at Tottenham signed him up professionally in 2010. Kane then spent several seasons out on loan to various clubs, including Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City. His spell at Millwall was particularly successful, earning him the title of the club’s Young Player of the Year for 2011-12.

It wasn’t until his return to Spurs that Kane really started to stand out as a player. His first full season for his home club came in the 2014-15 season, which ended with Kane as the second-highest scorer in the league – 21 goals to Sergio Agüero’s 26. This was also the year that Mauricio Pochettino was appointed manager, and over the years he and Kane developed a close relationship. In 2015 Kane made his international debut, scoring against Lithuania for Roy Hodgson’s England squad in a Euro 2016 qualifier.

That first season at Spurs saw Kane’s FIFA score jump ten points to 78, and since then his rise has been no less than meteoric. He was the Premier League’s top scorer for the following two seasons, and during 2017-18 his own personal best of 30 goals was beaten only by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah on 32. This was also the year that Kane was named captain of the English national team.

As captain of the England squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Kane led the national team to its first semi-final in 28 years. England’s young team quashed the pessimistic predictions to finish fourth, and Kane won the Golden Boot for his six goals, which included a hat-trick against Panama. It was a World Cup performance unmatched by an England player since Gary Lineker’s appearance in 1986, more than 30 years previously.

Spurs have had a good run during Kane’s tenure, finishing second in 2016-17 and no lower than fifth during that time. Kane has been the team’s top scorer every season. Riding high on the success, a new state-of-the-art stadium opened its doors in April 2019, on the site of the former White Hart Lane. Spurs fans rejoiced when the team reached the final of the Champion’s League that same year, although they couldn’t defeat a dominant Liverpool FC in Madrid.

Turning Tide for Tottenham

Since the start of the current season Tottenham’s fortunes have started to unravel, with a series of events which have seen the side struggling to rise from mid-table. A lacklustre start to the season, which left the side floundering in 14th place, led to the unceremonious sacking of manager Pochettino. Replacing him with the controversy-courting Jose Mourinho was a decision that angered many fans.

Mourinho’s arrival failed to make the desired impact, and pundits have questioned whether his management style is helping Kane realise his full potential. A hamstring injury on New Year’s Day required surgery, putting the rest of his season in doubt. It was only one of a string of injuries that have added to Spurs’ misfortunes in recent months.

Odds on the Spurs at New Betting Sites

There’s still a lot to bet on this season, as we shall see, including whether the new manager will still be with Spurs this time next year. The odds found at established and new betting sites at the start of the season have changed dramatically since the first match kicked off back in August.

The 2019-20 season has been an interesting one, and not just because of the unprecedented intermission. Man City’s Champion’s League ban has given Spurs renewed hope that they can snag at least sixth position and qualify for next year’s competition. It may be an uphill struggle, but with seven more games to play, there is a chance for Spurs to turn things round. If you fancy a flutter on Tottenham’s European chances, you can place your bet at any new licensed online bookmaker – the odds that Spurs will qualify for the Europa League are shorter than for the more prestigious competition.

The break in the season lasted exactly 100 days from its suspension in March to resumption on June 17. Liverpool may have already claimed the title, but there is still a lot to play for, and fans must be hopeful that the interruption will have given Spurs time to regroup, and for Kane and other team mates to recover from their injuries.

Indeed, the first two fixtures – a one-all draw with Man United and a two-nil win over West Ham – have renewed belief that Spurs can salvage something from the season. Kane, a little rusty after so long out, managed his first goal in six months in the second match. One comfort for fans in this difficult season is that Arsenal are even worse off. There’s still one more derby to go for Spurs and their oldest rivals, and it’s certain that lots of fans will be putting their money on their team via the latest betting sites. Fittingly, the final showdown takes place on the very last day of the season.

What’s Next for Kane?

At the end of last season, most betting men would have put their money on Kane remaining a Tottenham lifer. The upheavals of the past months have put this in doubt. Spurs may be Kane’s childhood club, but anyone who has worked with him will attest to his ambition.

Kane’s current contract runs until 2024, but loyalty alone will not be enough to keep him if he feels he has outgrown the club. Fans are concerned that the departure of his friend and mentor Pochettino may have loosened Kane’s ties, and that a bad season will be enough to make him eager for new pastures. Mourinho may insist that his star player isn’t going anywhere, but an ambitious and talented striker won’t be satisfied with an empty trophy case for much longer.
