The Gareth Bale every fan of the Spurs was probably expecting to sign to the team was the Welshman that was able to trash the hopes and dreams of Liverpool in the 2017/18 Champions League final. The one that remained pivotal for Real Madrid when they said their goodbyes to their all-time highest goal scorer Cristiano Ronaldo.

That was the Gareth Bale Spurs were hoping for in their team. Although the dream of Bale returning to the club came true, the dream seems to be a twisted one as the Welshman has been unable to find his footing in the Jose Mourinho team.

Today, former Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov claimed that the Welshman might have to return to Santiago Bernabeu as he hasn’t been “productive” for Mourinho.

Ever since he returned to the White Hart Lane from the Spanish giants on a season-long loan deal, Bale has been in a fight for minutes and fitness. The Welsh winger first stint with Tottenham ended when he move to Spain to join Madrid for a then-world record fee of £85 million in the summer of 2013, and he went on to register over 100 goals for the Spanish giants lifting two La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League.

However, the Wales international was marked to be surplus to requirements in the Madrid team by head coach Zinedine Zidane before the start of the 2020/21 campaign. He was also excluded from the starting lineup for the majority of their games last season, of which BoyleSports followed up with odds delivered to the fans ahead of the upcoming games for that campaign.

Spurs were hoping the Wales international will be able to reignite his best form on his return to the White Hart Lane, but this has not been the case as the 31-year-old winger has only been able to register three goals in 12 appearances under the management of Mourinho. Most of those games were gotten from being subbed into a match.

Berbatov, who registered 46 goals in 102 appearances for the club, initially believed that the Welsh winger was the perfect player the Spurs need to complete their dangerous trio attack, but he went on to admit that his former team-mate has been struggling to make his mark in the squad ever since his return to the team.

The former Tottenham forward spoke to the media, saying: “I was expecting a lot of him coming to Spurs, to shake things up and for him, Son and Kane to make it a trio upfront that can rival the Liverpool attacking trio, for example.

“For the moment it is 100 percent not working. Hopefully, he can get back to 100 percent and start playing. If not, in the end, it is an easy decision – he can go back to Madrid.

“Whatever the reason [for his lack of games], Gareth Bale is injury-free now because he’s on the bench for the team, but he’s not playing from the first minute so it means that obviously, he’s not producing the right level of football Jose Mourinho wants from him, which is a shame because I like him a lot.”

The Spurs fans will be hoping to see the Welshman return to the squad when they travel on Monday to face Wycombe for the fourth round of the FA Cup, before returning for action in the Premier League as they will be facing defending champions, Liverpool, next Thursday.
