Spurs need to do the business, in the end

The business end of the season is here. Will Spurs shut up shop or go on a spree?

Everton. Friday night football. Then a League Cup final against the quad chasing Manchester City. Then the remaining Premier League fixtures. Then the summer. Then the EUROs. Then the summer transfer window. Then next season. The future isn’t something we are privy to, but there’s a good chance we can predict how it’s going to turn out between now and the end of the season. We’re in the end game now. The business end of the domestic league. We have a chance of redemption. Of attaining some dignity and pride and perhaps rescuing some glory from a season were we have wasted so much of it.

Hand on heart, based on what we’ve seen in recent weeks (even when we were churning out some good results), I’m uncertain we can muster up any type of consistency to get a Top Four place. But this is not breaking news. We know this, in our hearts. We’ve known for a while. There are simply better teams, in form, and more focused that will battle it out for the spots. Spurs, sadly, have not only made themselves look bad…they’ve made others looks far better than they are in actuality.

With Kane and Son, thankfully, we’ve had two of the best finishers in the country. No doubting the top scorer odds with these two goal and assisting machines. Kane, especially is seeking out another golden boot for his efforts along with a couple of Player of the Year nominations.

The attention will be on Jose Mourinho once more. He literally begs for the attention even if he’s often pretending he doesn’t care much about it. A recent quote was to suggest he knew why Spurs were dropping points but could never reveal the reason. Looks like we have a mystery harder to solve than the Zodiac Killer.

Not.

He’s obviously once more digging at his own player, their inability to perform at an elite level he expects playing the type of football that requires elite players in most of the 11 positions. What Jose seems to forget is that nobody is forcing him into attempting to roll back the years with a system that is unfortunately corrupt in the modern game.

Jose, afterall, is the one selecting the players. Coaching them. Instructing them. His job is to instil confidence and to inspire. But apparently, these responsibilities have little to do with him.

If we somehow manage to defeat the formidable City, then Jose will no doubt make the victory about himself. How he’s managed to win something at Spurs with a squad that simply isn’t good enough (even if he’s often citied it is good enough, but, well…he changes the narrative to suit the mood).

It’s a difficult time and yet it’s not a disastrous one. It’s simply, as noted already, one that will forever be remembered for being wasteful.

The business end of the season means the margin for excuses is mostly exhausted now. Time to get to work and earn back some of that lost respect.
