What Could Tottenham Learn From Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool?

Liverpool may have ever so narrowly missed out on the quadruple, but there’s a wealth of knowledge that can be gained studying from them. Following a stunning end to the season for Spurs, with a 5-0 win over Norwich, and a top-four finish, it can be difficult to know where to go next. However, with the likes of odds comparison site oddschecker currently listing Liverpool as second favourites to win next year’s Premier League, it’s obvious that Tottenham can learn a thing or two from Klopp’s formidable build at Anfield, something Peter Crouch has been explicit in stating.

Regardless of where your alliances lie, it’s impossible to deny that the current Liverpool squad are more than impressive. Sure, they narrowly missed out on Europe’s first quadruple, following Man City’s completely mind-boggling comeback against Aston Villa, however, just to be within a touching distance of a quadruple is utterly unbelievable. Spurs too had their best season in four years, bagging a spot in the top four by the skin of their teeth with a single point over their north London rivals, Arsenal. Tottenham also had the joint top scorer of the 2021/22 season with Son Heung-min who shares the accolade with Liverpool legend, Mo Salah. It’s been five years since Spurs did better than finishing fourth, so what can they learn from this exceptionally talented Liverpool side to take with them into the next year?

Crouch Calls for Emulation

In a recent interview, former Liverpool and England striker, Peter Crouch, explained what Spurs could take from Liverpool. The 6”5 legend of the game, Crouch, said that Tottenham’s top priorities should be having a manager who somewhat replicates Jurgen Klopp. Although Conte’s future at Spurs remains somewhat unclear, Crouch’s comments do not necessarily mean finding a new manager, but more just having a manager who follows in Klopp’s footsteps and uses his philosophy. Crouch went onto describe the plethora of changes Klopp has brought into place over his time at the club since taking over from Brendan Rodgers back in 2015. He then added that the players need to want to succeed just as much as the manager, saying they need to ‘to have the right attitude, [be] the right age, [and have] the hunger’ to do well. Another thing that makes Klopp one of the best in the world, is the fact that he has championed accountability, communication, and knowledge, putting a huge emphasis on what happens off the pitch, rather than strictly on it.

One advantage Klopp had when joining the Reds was a massive financial budget which allowed him to sculpt a team of international players he believed would fit in well. Since 2015, Klopp has signed over 30 players, including many of the players who have helped transform Liverpool into the powerhouse they are today. Players such as Sadio Mane, Joël Matip, Mo Salah, and Virgil van Dijk. Should Conte stay with Tottenham, he must be granted a decent budget.

Adequate Reflection

Finally, Klopp has also proven time and time again that he learns from his mistakes. Klopp uses defeats and pressure as motivation to do better. He uses failure as an educational tool to look back on, and figure out what went wrong so that it doesn’t happen again. Admittedly, the bulk of his time at Liverpool has been littered with success, bagging one Premier League title (Liverpool’s first league title in thirty years), two League Cups, one FA Cup, the Champion’s League, one European Super Cup, and one Club World Cup. However, despite that rather impeccable record, Klopp is this successful because he doesn’t let failure stand in his way. He doesn’t let it hinder him. Instead, he reflects, and then makes sure not to make the same mistakes twice.

Every club could learn a valuable lesson from Jurgen Klopp. In fact, any team leader in any job could learn a lot about management from his example.
