Tottenham Hotspur's undeniable stature

Results on the pitch are usually the primary concern of supporters, although wider appreciation and recognition can also be welcome, particularly when there are fans who continue to gripe about which direction the club is going. But following the release of a newly published rankings chart, there’s every reason to think a little more positively.

Taking in the bigger picture can sometimes bring surprising discoveries, which is certainly the case when looking through the latest FiveThirtyEight global club rankings, largely because Tottenham Hotspur are prominently featured within the top ten. This regularly updated ranking system is produced by a group of American data analysts, affiliated to ABC News Internet Ventures, based upon their own enhanced Soccer Power Index (SPI) system.

Numerous metrics are considered and appropriately weighted, when attempting to compare how more than 600 club teams are performing. Individual player values via Transfermarkt account for just one part of the system, alongside team results dating as far back as 1888, plus more recent data points via Opta since 2010. These are mixed within various other calculations, including the relative strength of competitions.

Following the Data

While it may seem like there’s a ranking for anything and everything these days, when carefully produced they can be quite insightful and entirely valid. This would certainly appear to be the case with this FiveThirtyEight ranking for global football clubs, which is based upon a profound level of research and number crunching, highlighting Tottenham Hotspur as one of the most prominent clubs in the game right now.

Somewhat unsurprisingly given their domestic dominance in recent years, Manchester City are clearly valued as the most powerful club in world football right now. Liverpool came third on the list overall thanks to their current prominence, while Chelsea ranked third for performance in both domestic and European competitions. Then come the mighty Spurs, ranked as the fourth most powerful club in England and tenth overall in the world. For added interest and amusement, Arsenal were 17th in the rankings.

Interestingly, when calculating the data and working through their prediction models, the same analysts also gave Tottenham a 5% chance of winning the Premier League, heading into the 2022-23 campaign. While that may seem rather slim, various bookmakers would appear to agree with that evaluation, regarding the team coached by Antonio Conte as outside contenders. Only time will tell if those percentages can be turned into silverware.

But along with using data to aid our betting interests, reliable sources of information regarding bookmakers can also prove highly useful. This is what the latest Arabian Betting trusted guide aims to provide, covering the safest and most secure online sites and apps, alongside highlighting where to find good value odds and promotions. The information available is also backed by honest expert reviews, based upon industry insight and user feedback.

Spurs Getting Stronger?

While the summer transfer window remains open, there is every opportunity for Tottenham Hotspur to further strengthen their chances of Premier League success. However, three signings in particular have been greeted with optimism by fans, adding to their hopes and expectations ahead of the 2022-23 season, during which Antonio Conte and the squad will undoubtedly be aiming to win trophies.

Despite some concerns around the age of 33-year-old winger Ivan Perisic, the Croatian international is vastly experienced and still a phenomenally talented player. Getting him on a free transfer is even better, given his levels of success at previous clubs including Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, both of whom were listed above Tottenham in the rankings already discussed.

Adding much needed muscle in central midfield is 25-year-old Yves Bissouma, who reportedly cost £30 million according to BBC Sport, which includes the initial fee plus add-ons relating to performance targets. Easily the best player for Brighton and Hove Albion last season, the Mali international was also one of the most consistent in the Premier League, attracting a wealth of interest from top clubs in England and across the continent.

Finally, the addition Richarlison gives Tottenham plenty of added punch in attack, costing an initial fee of £50 million plus £10 million in potential add-ons. While some critics may say the 25-year-old is hardly a prolific scorer, he has hit double figures in three of his last four seasons with Everton, while he also leads the line for the Brazilian national team. But will he be joined by any other big signings? Well, rumour has it the club is looking for a playmaker, so watch this space.
