World Cup Ratings

The World Cup has treated us to an abundance of footballing talent. The games have had flair, excitement, upsets and spectacular play. Some players have solidified themselves as stars; others are cementing their legacy and more are establishing themselves as forces on the world stage.

That said, a number of Tottenham players have played starring roles at the World Cup. With an international squad, Spurs have representatives from several countries. But that begs the question, which Lilywhites have shone at the World Cup?

Richarlison

Richarlison has burst to life during the World Cup. The explosive forward has shown flashes during the early phases of his Spurs career, but he may have had this competition in the back of his mind. Firing Brazil into the quarter-finals, he played a pivotal role for the Seleção Canarinho. His hot form saw him bag three goals in three starts. Play like this has not only seen Brazil priced as favourites in the World Cup winner odds at 13/8, but has also seen him become the second favourite in World Cup Golden Boot odds at 15/2.

Richarlison opened the tournament by putting dark horse Serbia to the sword in a 2-0 win, with the Spurs man bagging both goals. He picked up the man of the match award and earned an 8.5 rating on Whoscored. Continuing his hard play in the second game, he was rested in the final group match as Brazil had already secured qualification. The electric forward came back to score in their round of 16 game against Korea Republic, which was a remarkably one-sided game with Brazil seeing out the match in the second half. Rating: 8.7

Ivan Perišić

At the beginning of the World Cup, some casual fans may not have thought of Ivan Perišić when thinking of who will be some of Spurs’ top-performing players. However, those who have watched Perisic will know how vital he is to a winning side. Quick, versatile, commanding, strong and can play with the ball at his feet, the wide man has all the tools for an elite footballer.

The Croatian winger started the tournament in great form and got an assist in their opener. He started every game in the group and helped a crafty Croatian side into the knockout stages. Although he didn’t start against Japan, he came on and scored their only goal of the game to help them go through on penalties. Rating: 8.1

Harry Kane/Son Heung-min/Hugo Lloris

Three of Spurs’ best players and leaders are also the same thing for their nation. Each player captains their national side, proving the Tottenham leaders in their squad. They may not have set the World Cup alight with their play, but every one of them has been a steadying presence to their team and stepped up in moments when they needed them. Although they hadn’t been spectacular, they played each a pivotal role in getting their side to the knockout stages. Son has been knocked out of the World Cup, but South Korea surpassed all expectations by qualifying from their group so it was a hugely successful tournament for them. Rating: 7.2

It has been a joy to watch the football on display at the World Cup so far, with some Spurs players highlighting their quality with leading roles for their teams on the biggest stage of all.
