Harry Kane breaks Jimmy Greaves’ record, but team trophies remain elusive for the Tottenham Hotspur superstar

Record breaking Kane still searching for the silver pot

In his first game for Tottenham, 18-year-old Harry Kane had a penalty kick saved. At the time, no one could have imagined that he would go on to score 39 penalty kicks for the club and beat Jimmy Greaves’ record number of goals.

But almost 11.5 years after that missed chance against Hearts in a Europa League qualifier, Kane is now Tottenham’s all-time leading scorer and Tottenham Hotspurs tickets are available at seatsnet.com to see the great striker in action. He scored goal number 267 against the current Premier League champions, Manchester City. It was his 200th goal in that league.

Think about that for a minute. It is an amazing thing to do. Kane broke Greaves’ club record by scoring goals for Harry Redknapp, Andre Villas-Boas, Tim Sherwood, Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, Ryan Mason, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Antonio Conte’s Tottenham teams.

Kane has been through a lot of rough times at Spurs, but he has always made it through. He has also enjoyed brief periods of stability and even the occasional “glory, glory” moments. There have been a bunch of personal awards and honors, but Kane’s Tottenham has never won a trophy.

Harry Kane is the third player in the Premier League, after Alan Shearer (260) and Wayne Rooney, to score 200 goals (208). Kane scored his 200th goal in his 304th game, which is less than both the Illustrious Shearer (306) and the legendary Rooney (462).

Is he really on par with Greaves?

The answer to this question is straightforward. Greaves played with the Spurs from 1961 until 1970, appearing in 379 games and scoring 266 goals for the club. Kane, on the other hand, scored the Spurs’ 267th goal in his 416th game. As a consequence, there is some room for debate, but when it comes down to it, there isn’t much of a difference in their incredible strike rates.

There should be no dispute as to whether or not Kane is in the Greaves’ class. He is near the summit. Remember that he joined Spurs at the start of his career as an inexperienced player, as opposed to Greaves, who arrived at White Hart Lane as a finished product. Greaves had previously played for Chelsea before spending time at Milan. As a result of this, he was able to get off to a flying start with the club, scoring a hat trick in his debut game against Blackpool.

Greaves scored 37 goals for Spurs in the 1962-1963 First Division season, which remains the club record for the most goals scored in a single season. Greaves still retains the record for most goals scored in a single season.

Kane scored at least 20 league goals in each of the next four seasons, starting in 2014-15 and ending in 2017-18. His 30-goal season in 2017-18 was his best in the Premier League, and he finished with at least 20 league goals for the sixth straight season in 2017-18. During Greaves’ tenure, 42 games were played throughout the regular season, as opposed to the current norm of 38 games.

Harry Kane had an outstanding season in 2017-18, scoring 41 goals across all competitions for an average of 0.93 goals per 90 minutes played (0.88 per 90 minutes in the Premier League). He was awarded the Golden Boot after the tournament for scoring the most goals in the World Cup. The view from the summit of Peak Kane was breathtaking. Even if Kane isn’t at the height of his game right now, the version that is presently performing is rather difficult to defeat.

Where are the medals and trophies, though?

Those who are seeking a reason to criticize Kane can point out that his goals have not brought Spurs any significant prizes for the trophy case. When it comes to a real tally, awards such as Premier League Player of the Month and domestic Golden Boots (three in total: 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2020-21) are not taken into account.

Kane’s success is bolstered by the fact that he can maintain such high levels of productivity while playing for a team that so often underachieves as a unit. He is the anchor, and he is unflappable and astonishingly reliable. Kane was able to break out of his rut and finish the season with 27 goals despite his fortunes taking an unusual turn for the worst early in the previous season. This occurred when the likelihood of Kane moving to Manchester City decreased.

His shot conversion rate in 2021-22 was 16.07 percent, which was the lowest it had been since 2015-16 (when it was 14.58 percent), but it had risen to 18.18 percent before City’s visit.

Greaves moved to Tottenham from Milan for a transfer fee of £99,999 just a few short months after the club won the domestic double under Bill Nicholson. Throughout his time at Chelsea and Spurs, Greaves was never able to win the First Division.

Nonetheless, when playing for Tottenham, he was successful enough to win the FA Cup on two separate occasions (1962 and 1967) and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963. Kane does not stop searching for gold of this kind, even though some people see Champions League slots as having the same amount of weight, if not more weight, than winning a domestic cup.

Even if the top-four premise is just for the bean counts, cup victories will always be a highly sought-after product on the playing field. It should come as no surprise that Kane has been urged to leave Spurs and join Manchester City in the past and he was well aware that he could win several trophies by joining Pep at Man City. Now, with Haaland signed at the Etihad that ship has sailed.

How far will Kane go from here?

When Greaves passed away in September 2021, tributes paid to him focused on how he adapted his play as opposing defenses became more aware of his skill and more perceptive in general. Greaves’ passing was commemorated by several high-profile athletes, including many Professional football players.

Later in his career, it was observed that Greaves transformed into a poacher in the penalty area, rather than relying on his outstanding pace and dribbling to generate chances for himself.

If we take a look at Kane, we may conclude that he is going through a transition that is comparable to that one. This year, seven of his 19 goals have been scored by headers, while in the previous seasons, seven of his 41 goals were scored by headers. In addition to this, he is not dribbling toward the other team’s defenders and shooting the ball as often as he used to.

During the 2017–18 season, Kane attempted 25 of these moves when he had the ball at his feet and was taking on defenders before shooting. He participated in a total of 48 games during that season. Kane had only four take-on in a total of 29 games throughout the 2022–23 season before his encounter versus City on Sunday.

Kane, like Greaves before him and even Cristiano Ronaldo, has seen some of that early enthusiasm fade over the course of his career. Yet, Kane has learned ways to continue to have huge success in the 18-yard box and excite the Spurs fans. When it comes to Kane, focusing his efforts in and around that zone provides advantages not just to himself but also to those who are around him.
