The Gambling Sponsor Bans- Will it Affect Tottenham?
Over the years, different top-flight clubs from the Premier League have partnered with numerous gambling brands. This was primarily for brand recognition and revenue. So, to advertise each gambling sponsorship, individual clubs would display a gambling company’s logo on the team’s jerseys. This is so that fans and supporters viewing the game live or on TV can see these gambling ads during matches and sports broadcasts.
The strategy of having football clubs merge with gambling companies in this way has proven to be successful. However, recently, the Premier League announced that it was no longer allowing its clubs to advertise gambling brands on their shirts.
So far, the Premier League is made up of 20 clubs; however, only 8 clubs currently have gambling sponsorships. These include:
With front-of-shirt gambling sponsorship deals with only eight of these clubs, one can’t help but wonder. What this would mean for the remaining clubs, specifically Tottenham Hotspur?
In this article, we’ll look at how the ban on gambling sponsorships will affect clubs that didn’t initially have such an agreement.
Banning Gambling Sponsors: What This Means
A majority of bettors who wager on sports at non UKGC casinos and other sportsbooks do so for enjoyment. However, many believe that sports betting advertisements lead many gamblers to adopt reckless gambling habits.
This, together with many other reasons has placed the sports industry in a bit of a tight corner. One example is the UK government wanting to consider a wider ban on sports betting sponsorships. But, it seems the option to stop front-of-shirt deals isn’t the worst of all the options they have.
Like advertisements that promoted the use of tobacco, fast-food and alcohol, critics argue that sports betting deals influence specific audiences. This includes impressionable and young followers to indulge in sports betting. Here, the wrong attitude and lack of experience in sports betting could harm many individuals in the long run.
How the Ban Affects Tottenham
Although all 20 clubs in the Premier League have agreed to terminate every front-of-shirt deal that exists, there are exceptions. A club’s shirt sleeves, stadium advertising hoardings, and training tops are alternatives that gambling companies can consider. Even though this cause is justified, clubs still have the option to continue signing new betting deals until the 2026/27 season.
A typical gambling sponsorship agreement can be anywhere between UK£4 million to UK£6 million. So, an outsider looking in would easily assume that each of the Premier League’s clubs would suffer a significant loss. Most especially if a deal like this was to no longer exist. But this isn’t the case.
The sports industry, its leagues and clubs have several income streams. So, even though betting deals do account for a portion of the clubs’ income, TV money brings in the league’s largest amount of revenue. Therefore, having to do away with betting sponsors won’t be as significant as we think.
Instead, clubs like Tottenham can look forward to possible exposure on advertising hoardings and sleeve deals. Another option would be to focus on cryptocurrency firms. These could be just as rewarding as what betting sponsors are offering.
