No Europe this season but plenty of Europe looking back

Tottenham Hotspur has enjoyed a rich history in European club competitions dating back to the early 1960s. As one of England’s most successful clubs, Tottenham has lifted two major European trophies and enjoyed many memorable matches against elite continental opposition. Relive some of the greatest nights in Tottenham’s European journey.

Triumphant Beginnings

Tottenham announced themselves on the European stage in style by winning the 1963 European Cup Winners’ Cup. In the final against Atlético Madrid at White Hart Lane, Tottenham produced an exhilarating performance to demolish the Spanish giants 5-1. The image of captain Dave Mackay lifting the trophy remains an iconic moment. This triumph made Tottenham the first British club to win a major UEFA competition.

The UEFA Cup provided more European glory in 1972 when Tottenham overcame Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 in an all-English final. After going 2-0 down, Martin Chivers and Alan Gilzean scored to take the match to extra time before Chivers grabbed the winner. It was a dramatic comeback in Rotterdam to give Tottenham their second European trophy.

Battling Against the Elite

Although unable to replicate those cup successes, Tottenham remained a force in Europe by competing with the continent’s elite clubs. In the 1962-63 European Cup, Tottenham faced the mighty Benfica in the semi-finals. A 2-1 win at home gave Spurs hope, but they lost 3-1 in Lisbon to the eventual winners.

The Champions League era provided more gallant ties against Europe’s best. The 2010-11 campaign saw Tottenham face defending champions Inter Milan in the quarter-finals. After a 0-0 draw at San Siro, Tottenham were minutes away from a famous win at White Hart Lane before Gareth Bale was harshly sent off. Despite being down to 10 men, Tottenham held on for a memorable 0-0 draw but bowed out on away goals.

Tottenham’s European adventure has captured the hearts of generations of fans. Older supporters nostalgically remember the glory nights of the 1960s and 1970s. A new generation has grown up watching Champions League thrillers at the Lane. Thanks to online sports betting, fans today can even wager on Tottenham’s chances of creating more European magic.

Near Misses

While lifting two European trophies, Tottenham have also suffered their fair share of near misses. The closest they have come to winning the FA Cup and UEFA Cup double was in 1971-72. Having won the League Cup and UEFA Cup, Tottenham faced Leeds United in the FA Cup Final and were strong favourites. However, Leeds won 1-0 to deny Tottenham a historic trophy double.

In the 1983-84 UEFA Cup final, Tottenham faced Anderlecht in Brussels. The match was overshadowed by the Heysel Stadium disaster before kick-off that led to 39 deaths. With the tragedy unfolding, the match went ahead, but Tottenham missed several chances and lost 1-0.

Most recently, in 2019, Tottenham reached their first-ever Champions League final against Liverpool in Madrid. Despite a bright start, Liverpool took control and claimed a 2-0 win, with Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi scoring the goals. It was a painful end to an impressive European run.

The Glory Nights Live On

From the breakthrough European triumph in 1963 to the modern Champions League adventure, Tottenham has created some unforgettable moments and matches. Their pedigree and passion in Europe is undisputed. With the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son leading the charge, Tottenham’s glory nights on the continent may yet have more chapters to write.
