Tottenham’s Talismanic Striker May Be Gone, But Postecoglou is Doing Just Fine
Nobody ever predicted that Tottenham Hotspur would ever be on top of the EPL coming into the 2023/2024 season following Kane’s long-due departure to Bayern Munich.
The England international became a legend with the club and won several awards, including the PFA Young Player of the Year in the 2014-15 season and the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year in the 2016-17 season.
His era at Tottenham ended with him being the player with the most goals in the club’s history. He is also second to Allan Shearer as EPL’s top scorer of all time, with an astounding 213 goals under his name.
One Coach to Rule Them All!
For the past few seasons, Tottenham’s management has been quite shaky, with various coaches coming and going, especially after the departure of the beloved Mauricio Pochettino 4 years ago.
Ange Postecoglou might have been the silver lining in such a tough time when their renowned top scorer exited the club.
After being appointed as the club’s new head coach this summer, Postecoglou’s secret tactics on the first eleven seem to work wonders. The club commenced this season on a promising note, exhibiting brilliant tactics in matches against EPL powerhouses such as Arsenal and Liverpool.
The Australian coach brought back the routine wins we used to see at Spurs under Pochettino and a sense of togetherness and winning mentality in the team.
Fans are Happy!
On match days at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, there’s a marked contrast in the fans’ mood compared to the previous season when the team’s struggles led to an eighth-place finish.
For the first time since the 2009-10 season, the team missed out on European competitions. Luckily, the current season has brought smiles back to the faces of the supporters.
Postecoglou’s side is now setting its sights on winning the premier league. The players are like a group of angry wolves, with ambitious players like Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Yves Bissouma leading the pack. The team has been on top of the table ahead of Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool a couple of times already.
Magical Son Stepping into the Shoes of Kane!
Son Heung-Min, the club’s captain and current top scorer, has stepped up and succeeded Harry Kane. He has showcased brilliant on-field performances and is now giving Haaland a run for the Golden Boot this season.
He already scored a hat-trick against Burnley in a breathtaking match that ended 2-5 at Turf Moor. The South Korean might be hungry for more, which is good news for the FPL managers with him as their captain.
On the other hand, Kane is doing what he does best: scoring goals and being the playmaker. Things didn’t go too well for him on his debut day at Bayern as they lost 3-0 to RB Leipzig in the 2023 DFL-Supercup.
The good news is that the England captain has bounced back and outdone himself in the subsequent matches, scoring back-to-back goals for Bayern and already breaking Bundesliga records.
Sponsorship Deals and Revenue for the Club
Tottenham’s apparent ambition to strengthen their squad for future UEFA competitions, given their strong start and likely top-four finish, emphasizes securing profitable sponsorship agreements as a top priority.
Despite having big sponsorship deals from companies like AIA, NIKE, and Cinch, Spurs may still be forced to secure more sponsorship deals from various industries to try and generate more revenue even as the premier league comes down on controversial online UK casinos or betting companies’ front-of-shirt sponsorship deals.
First Loss this Season
Despite the controversial 4-1 loss to Chelsea last Monday, which was, you guessed it right, their first loss this season, they are still holding on to the top. They are now just a point behind Guardiola’s side with 26 points in 11 matches.
The match started with Spurs taking an early lead after Kulesevski scored an opener 6 minutes into the game.
Unfortunately, the game changed and went south quickly for the Lilywhites after VAR denied Caicedo’s goal. Upon further checking, Romero was given a straight red card, and Chelsea awarded a penalty that saw them equalize in the 35th minute, a double whammy for Spurs, who held a drawn first half with 10 men.
The old saying misfortunes strike twice, scratch that, thrice, came into play when Destiny Udogie was shown a second yellow and sent off following a mistimed tackle on Chelsea’s Sterling 10 minutes into the second half.
Postecoglou’s men were reduced to 9 but fought and continued attacking even with the few men left on the pitch.
However, with their key players gone, Tottenham could not attack and defend simultaneously, and “The Blues” utilized the last minutes of the match to go up 4-1. In a post-match interview, Ange defended his team, saying they will have a go even with 5 men on the pitch.
No Team Has had Such a Great Start as Tottenham and not Finished in the Top Four
This attacking mentality with high-line tactics shows how much of a difference the Australian has instilled in the team despite the heavy defeat to Chelsea.
Considering all factors, including injuries and suspensions, it will be interesting to see how Spurs fare for the rest of the campaign this season.
If the club keeps it up, the effort would see them secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League the following season. Will Tottenham be able to stay on top now that they have faced their first defeat? Only time will tell.
