Champions League – A real possibility for next season?

Could we?

Finishing last season in eighth place has been the worst league performance for Tottenham for a really long time – since 2008, as a matter of fact. Although the team managed to score 70 goals in the Premier League, and that’s not something we should underestimate, that just wasn’t enough (not to talk about saying goodbye to any European competition in 2023-2024).

It was another great year for Harry Kane, who finished as the team’s top scorer for the 9th season in a row, with 32 goals in 49 outings in all competitions. He became the club’s all-time goalscorer in February 2023 with his 267th strike in Lilywhite.

Naturally, his departure to Bayern Munich was a big disappointment for us fans, considering the high expectations for this season. Luckily though so far the team is showing great fitness at this stage, as the new manager Ange Postecoglou seems to have managed to change the dynamic. However, before we get into that, let’s review briefly the tumultuous past couple of years.

Tumultuous years for the club

Some decisions made at a management level seem mind-blowing. Five months after reaching the Champions League final in 2019, Mauricio Pochettino was sacked by the club and replaced with Jose Mourinho.

Apparently, the club wanted an elite manager who was able to finally start winning big trophies. Mourinho’s appointment did not work out as planned, which made Tottenham focus on another candidate with a proven track record – Antonio Conte. A lavish salary reported to be as much as £15 million a year, including bonuses, was not enough to stir the club in the right direction.

Current Premier League standings

Even though he is not a notorious coach, Ange Postecoglou seems to be delivering better results compared to his predecessors. After the latest 3-2 home win against Brentford, Tottenham ranks 4th in the Premier League, an eligible place for the next Champions League season (knock on wood). The odds featured on the 18bet sportsbook, a popular sports betting website, were correct and the team had no problem in securing all 3 points.

At this stage, the team stands proud with 43 points – only 3 less than Arsenal and Manchester City, as a matter of fact. Kane’s departure seems to have been successfully filled by Richarlison, who scored a whopping 7 goals in the last 8 matches.

Defense continues to be an issue for the team, though, considering it has 33 conceded goals in only 22 Premier League matches. That’s the weakest defense among the top 5 teams and not a good piece of news, considering Tottenham still has to play against big names like Aston Villa, Newcastle, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal in the upcoming months.

No presence in any European League this season

Without any presence in a European league this season and due to the latest defeat in the FA Cup against Manchester City, Tottenham’s only hope for the season is to end among the top 4 in the Premier League. On the other hand, this means that the squad can focus all its attention on the only objective now – the Premier League.

Ange needs to integrate some of the new signings such as Evan Ferguson, Conor Gallagher and Pedro Concalves, to make sure that goal will be reached. The team has momentum and given results are better compared to last season, which creates excitement among all fans.
