The Spurs who stepped up to the plate after Harry Kane left for Germany

Who picked up the slack?

Last Summer Harry Kane ended his 19-year long association with Tottenham Hotspur and Spurs fans could have been forgiven for fearing the worst. Tottenham’s record goalscorer has been instrumental in the club’s development over the last decade and while he did not achieve his goal of lifting silverware while in North London, his contributions both as a leader and a goalscorer were billed to be sorely missed. Thankfully for Spurs though, those ominous warnings have not come to pass. Ange Postecoglou has instilled a new energy to a side that was desperately lacking in confidence following the 2022/23 campaign. His attacking brand of football has endeared the Australian to the fans who can’t help but chant Big Ange’s name around Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The 58-year-old manager demonstrated his credentials in the transfer market last summer, bringing in some great value signings who have slotted in seamlessly and already made a significant impact in the club’s fortunes. Despite falling off the pace in recent weeks, Spurs’ lightning quick start this term has them firmly in the hunt for a Champions League place and perhaps even a late title push. Hopes will be high that Postecoglou can maintain this momentum to the end of the league campaign but for now here’s a look at the Tottenham players who have made a difference so far this season.

Son Heung-Min

No surprises here. The South Korean international has been his usual self in front of goal with 12 goals and five assists from his 21 appearances, already surpassing last season’s goal contributions tally. It’s a timely turn of form too as the club have never been more reliant on his goalscoring prowess following Kane’s move to Bayern. While Son already has over 150+ goals to his name at the club, the pressure for him to hit the back of the net is more intense than ever before now that his striking partner has moved elsewhere. Their immensely successful partnership was feared throughout the league and was a huge factor in the Englishman’s goalscoring record at the club. Now the burden falls on the 31-year-old to be the main source of goals in Spurs’ bid for success this season and so far he is playing his part to perfection. James Maddison

Following a desperately disappointing campaign in which his former club Leicester City were relegated to the Championship, many suspected the 27-year-old would be on his way back to the Premier League in double quicktime with a new club before the start of the new season. Thankfully for Spurs fans he landed in North London and since then has exceeded all expectations. The midfielder was instrumental in setting the tone for the campaign with five goals and three assists from his first 11 Premier League games with the club. An argument could be made that he was the in-form player in the league before an untimely ankle injury sidelined him for a number of months. Even considering the lengthy time spent on the treatment table, at £40 million he is comfortably the best value purchase of the last summer transfer window. Spurs fans will be hoping he has a similar impact in the second half of the season. One thing’s for sure, his return coming off the bench in Spurs’ fourth round FA Cup tie with Manchester City is a sight for sore eyes in North London.

Destiny Udogie

The 21-year-old has been a revelation since returning to Spurs. The club loaned him back to Italian outfit Udinese after signing the defender for an initial fee of £15 million. It’s been an incredible return on investment as the left-back continues to put in stellar performances week after week and shows a level of maturity beyond his years. He has made quite the impression in his short spell, becoming one of the first names on the team sheet in Postecoglou’s side with 18 Premier League appearances, only missing out on a starting spot as a result of injury or suspension. His strong defensive displays have helped Tottenham become a tougher nut to crack this season while he also possesses the ability to pose a threat going forward as are the demands of modern fullbacks these days. There are still elements of his game that need some work, but the fact is at just 21-years-old he has no right to be as good as he has been for Spurs this season.

Micky Van De Ven

Since arriving from Wolfsburg in the summer, the Dutch defender has been the rock of Postecoglou’s defence and has been sorely missed in the starting lineup. Spurs’ long injury list stalled their momentum throughout the Christmas period, but there was no absence felt harder than that of Van De Ven. The Dutchman was out of action until recently with a hamstring injury suffered against Chelsea all the way back in November but his performances before then were outstanding. Not only strong in the tackle, his electric pace was too much to handle for many a Premier League forward. Spurs fans were happy to see him run out against Manchester United at Old Trafford in January, but even moreso for his display against City on Friday. The result might not have gone the way he wanted, but the 22-year-old put in a 10 out of 10 performance, with a terrific last ditch effort to stop Julian Alvarez netting for the Cityzens. Big Ange will be ecstatic to see him back to full fitness once again.
