There is never a time where football isn’t keeping us on the edge of our seats. The January transfer window is an especially tense time of year while we wait to see who might move where – and for how long.

We’ve had the long winter months where there hasn’t been a lot to do other than play games like 9 Pots of Gold and wait for some excitement to kick in. Well, we can guarantee that this transfer part to the season has got it off to a flying start.

But before we get into who is coming in and out of Tottenham Hotspur this season, let’s remind ourselves of the club’s history and some of the most poignant moments.

Brief history of Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur have been around for well over a century. This club was started originally by boys from a cricket club and from the local grammar school who also had the name ‘Hotspur’.

So, a seemingly random name has very interesting origins! It doesn’t seem to have anything much to do with Tottenham until you know this fun fact. This was way back in 1882, but it was officially given its colours in 1883. The colour navy was chosen for their kits and then in 1884, the name was officially changed to Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

The first competitive match that the team played was against their geographically near rivals, St. Albans in the London Association Cup.

Spurs won their first match with a score of 5-2 and they added the first amount of money to their kitty. This is when the colours were changed to the charcoal grey and white that we know so well.

Their kit would change a multitude of times over the next few decades, but the love for the team only got stronger.

The first FA cup was held in 1871 but this was before Tottenham had even started out as a football club. The team made their FA cup final debut in 1897 but unfortunately, they lost against Wellingborough.

But all was not lost. Tottenham won their first FA cup final in 1901. In 1963, the team made a historical achievement. They became the first British club to win a European championship.

It seems like a crazy thought now, but there was a time before the UK were always at the top of the football leagues. Since then, British football, and Tottenham Hotspur have gone from strength to strength.

Spurs post January transfer window

The start of the year is always a busy time for football transfers. There’s only a short amount of time before the January transfer window closes so if there’s any changes to be made, they need to be done quickly.

Most teams make their decisions on where and who they want to move at the end of the previous year. This is what starts the rumour mill going and fans begin to predict what could happen in the next January.

When it comes to Tottenham, this year they made big moves, and quickly. They started out by getting a loan deal for Timo Werner almost immediately in the new year. This marks the first time that the German player will be playing for a British team.

He’s on loan from the German team RB Leipzig so it will be interesting to see how this loan plays out. To be snapped up so quickly by a team like Tottenham, he must be showing a lot of promise. It marks an exciting start to 2024 for Werner and for Tottenham.

Next on the list of movers is Radu Dragusin. This Romanian footballer has made the permanent move over to Tottenham Hotspur from his home country of Romania. He’s been out on loan a couple of times before, but this is his first permanent move into a club.

He was previously loaned out to Genoa in July 2022 and Sampdoria and Salernitana before that in 2021. We have high hopes for this player and can’t wait to see what he brings to the Tottenham team.

The last addition to the team comes in the form of Lucas Bergvall. He’s a Swedish national and Tottenham had to fight to get him on their side. The Swedish team Djugarden were hoping to sign him – but Tottenham ended up winning the fight.

Sadly though, this did mean that we had to say goodbye to a few players from Tottenham this season. We said goodbye to Eric Dier, Hugo Lloris and Ivan Perisic from the team. Even though it’s always sad to see players leave the club, it does mean that we get to see what exciting energy the new players bring to the team.

Who are you most excited to see join the team this season?
