What Makes Spurs The Most Frustrating Team To Support In The EPL

For Spurs fans, life is far more complicated

Life as a Spurs fan is wildly frustrating. There are so many ups and downs you can be forgiven for thinking you’re on a ride at Alton Towers. We keep supporting them because we love the club and what it stands for but my God are we the most aggravating team to support in the league.

I genuinely think it’s easier to be a Burnley fan right now – they’re in the dumps, but at least they know what they’re getting every week!

For Spurs fans, life is far more complicated. I’ve thought long and hard about this and think I’ve come to the conclusion as to why we’re the most frustrating team to support in the EPL.

We’re Not Good At Beating The Teams We Should Beat

Look at Man City and Liverpool; they almost always beat the teams they should beat. Fans of those clubs go into a matchday against Fulham or Wolves knowing that they’ll come out the other side with three points.

As Spurs fans, we have no clue what will happen.

Look at our match against Fulham. If you were to place a bet on that match beforehand the bookies would have us as clear favourites. Even if you’re betting without GamStop via CasinoGam.uk sites, the bookmakers think we should win – and they think we should do so comfortably.

It is therefore beyond frustrating when we lose 3-0 to a team languishing in 12th place with more losses than wins this season.

This isn’t an anomaly either. A month before we lost to Wolves, drew against Everton and scraped passed both Burnley and Brentford. These are teams we should be beating comfortably, yet it’s always a struggle – and THAT’s frustrating.

Fair enough, other teams go through similar issues as us, but our struggles against lesser teams are made all the more aggravating when you take the following into account.

We’ve Got Big Results In Us!

I’m sure loads of Manchester United fans will pipe up arguing that their team is more frustrating to watch. Maybe from a general football-playing perspective as they play like utter garbage, but on a results basis they’re not as annoying as we are.

Aside from a random victory in the FA Cup against Liverpool, Man United haven’t had a “big” result for who knows how long. They always lose against the big teams these days, but we’re a different kettle of fish.

The Spur’s frustration comes from the fact that we always have a big result in us. If anything, we’re the bogey team for a lot of the best clubs in the league.

We’re unbeaten against the top three teams in the league this year – who else can say that? Man City always struggle against us, we’re highly competitive against Liverpool and we win as many as we lose against Arsenal.

Therein lies the problem for our fanbase; we know we’re more than capable of partying with the big boys. It’s something we’ve done for years now, yet we still go on weird runs where we can barely beat the worst teams in the league and suffer silly defeats or draws.

Scoring Goals Is Never A Problem

Goals win games. If we look at the teams who won the Premier League in recent seasons, they were all headed by a fantastic goalscorer. City have Haaland, Liverpool have Salah – hell, even when Chelsea won back in 2016/17 they had Diego Costa and Eden Hazard banging in goals.

At Tottenham, we’ve never had a problem with scoring goals! It’s something we’re incredibly good at, which is why a Spurs player has been in the top 5 goalscorers for all but two of the last NINE Premier League seasons.

For most of those years, we had Harry Kane banging them in left, right and centre. If we’re being truthful here, he scored more than enough goals to win the Premier League at least once. We really didn’t capitalise on having him up top – and it’s a similar situation since he left! Son has picked up the gauntlet and is right at the top of the charts despite spending time away with injuries and while on international duty.

It’s so frustrating to watch a team that scores more goals than most and can unlock any defence, yet not make the most out of it.

Arsenal Have Turned Things Around

Perhaps the most annoying thing of all is that our arch-rivals have turned the boat around. We enjoyed a good few years of North London dominance, finishing above Arsenal every year from 2016/17 to 2021/22.

This came after the red side of North London had our number for, let’s face it, decades. They were winning things and we could barely scrape a top-four finish. We turned things around fantastically and became the better team in this rivalry until last year when it looked like Arsenal flipped the script again.

The most frustrating thing about this is that we didn’t make the most of our “dominance”. We could’ve and should’ve won the league in 2016/17 but let it slip away. We’ve not come close since. Meanwhile, Arsenal narrowly missed out last year and are top of the table again this year. It’s bitterly frustrating seeing them turn things around before we’ve had a chance to claim true glory.

I guess that touches on what it’s like as a Spurs fan. We have incredible highs at points, yet some dramatic lows. We’re always the “nearly” team – the team that people think could be a dark horse for the title at the start of the season, yet we never quite get there. It’s hard to take, particularly when we’ve got such an exciting squad with so much potential. Hopefully, things will start to change after a year of two with Ange and we can finally create a new identity.
