Which Spurs Youngsters could make an impact this season?
One season of Ange Postecoglu, a season without Harry Kane, and Tottenham Hotspur managed a fifth place finish in the 2023/24 season in the Premier League.
There were ups and downs, but coming just two points behind fourth place Aston Villa as well as finishing higher than rivals Chelsea and teams like Newcastle United and Manchester United, it was pretty successful.
Success as a top side in the Premier League though is often defined by your ability to reach the Champions League positions, which coe with huge financial rewards. With so many sides in England competing for those top four places the odds calculator will have sides like Spurs, Chelsea and Aston Villa pretty close by in price.
Tottenham Hostpur had done some big business in the transfer window leading into their opening game of the 2024/25 season. The biggest being the arrival of Dominic Solanke for around £65 million from Bournemouth The striker will take on the centre forward role which has been somewhat vacant since Harry Kane’s departure and allows Heung-min Son to play more regularly off the wing.
Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Lucas Bergvall all arrived to improve the midfield, as well as Min-hyeok Yang from Gangwon FC who wil remain at his club till the new year on loan.
For the departures, along with Harry Kane, Eric Dier also went with his teammate to Bayern Munich part way through last season. This summer Emerson Royal departed for AC Milan, Joe Rodon went to Leads United permanently, and midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg went on loan to Olimpique Marseille.
While expensive additions with quality are important, Spurs have an excellent youth set up and youth recruitment department. These young players have been identified as potential stars for the future, and who knows, maybe the next Harry Kane.
Mikey Moore
The recently turned 17 year old striker has already caught the attention of head coach Ange Postecoglu. “Mikey has been really good,” Postecoglou told football.london, “Look he’s a very talented boy and for him, he’s had a fairly disrupted season, he’s had a couple of injuries. When he’s performed, he’s performed really well. The reports I’ve had on him have always been outstanding. It’s been good to have him.
Moore became Tottenhams youngest ever debutant in the first team last season and followed that up with 16 goals and nine assists in 14 games for the Under 18s last year. He has also performed well at England U17 level when he was part of the European Championships side and started four games providing one assist.
Jamie Donley
Another youngster who got minutes under Postecoglu last season. Donley is a creative midfielder/forward who has gone to Leyton Orient on loan this season to get regular first team minutes under his belt.
At nineteen years of age, it is important for Donley to get senior level experience if he is to challenge for minutes next season at Spurs. He has been part of the clubs academy since 2013 and has played all over the pitch in his young development but will likely be used as a hard working attacking player with a lot of creative potential.
The Northern-Irishman has opted to play for England and been involved with the U19s and managed 17 goal involvements for the Spurs U21s last season in 11 appearances.
Callum Olusesi
Another 17 year old, Olusesi looks an exciting prospect in the centre of midfield. Having signed his first professional contract back in March 2024, he is set to commit his immediate future to the club and look to continue his exciting development.
Olusesi was in high demand prior to agreeing his contract at Spurs, with the likes of Manchester United keen to add the lambeth born youngster to their ranks.
Having received glowing praise from former Manchester City great Yaya Toure, who after coaching with Tottenhams academy praised him as a top grade talent for his age group. When a player like Yaya Toure gives out praise, it’s worth noting a potential star is on the rise.
Will Lankshear
Lankshear is an all action, physical striker who turned into an absolute goal machine for the U21s last year netting 32 goals as well as three in three for England U19s.
He was unfortunate to miss the senior trip to Melbourne for pre season but this was due to monitoring his fitness and fatigue levels after such a strong season.
U21 head coach Wayne Burnett said of Lankshear; “He’s a goalscorer because he wants to get in the frame of the goal. He’s brave and he’s been a decent finisher. You don’t score that many goals out of coincidence. He’s worked tirelessly and he’s got a really nice trait that he’s obsessed with scoring goals. I don’t like to label players, and I’m not saying he’s an old school striker, but he’s a centre-forward who thrives on crosses and balls into the box. He’s got that willingness to run in behind and his hold-up play is getting better.”
A loan move may be on the cards, but he could be valuable in this busy schedule for cup games as well as Europa League
