Former Spurs Striker Says Consistency Is Key
Robbie Keane points to the ‘stop-start’ season so far for Spurs and on this, I think most (I can’t speak for all!) would agree with our former striker, the performances have been ‘decent’ it is just consistency is lacking.
With a visit from the resurgent Aston Villa at the weekend, it would be a fantastic time to start a run, as a win against them would surely give the team confidence? I am sure we won’t sit back, but if we do, it will not end well, so hopefully Postecoglu will have us set up right, to hurry and harass Villa and to push their defence into mistakes, as Palace did last night at Villa Park in the League Cup (fine, I know, different team, but same game plan!)
Keane told Betway Insider:
“I watched their first game when they absolutely battered Leicester and it could have been 4-0 or 5-0. Then you don’t score that second goal and you’re always vulnerable.”
Adding, “In the north London derby, Spurs were the better team in terms of possession and the way they played, but they never really looked like scoring, in my opinion. It was disappointing because Spurs usually create chances.
Where it went wrong was obviously at set pieces, and it was fairly simple. Arsenal are very, very strong in that area and Gabriel is probably one of the strongest individual players in the league in terms of attacking set pieces.”
He also returns to a theme I’ve seen from several pundits, that James Maddison gets criticism where it might not be totally deserved.
I have mixed thoughts on that, but Keane explains “I think he’s been good. He’s been taken off a couple of times but the players around him haven’t been doing that well. Son has scored a couple of goals, but for Solanke, for example, it’s taking time to get used to how Spurs play.”
“Getting his first goal against Brentford will have done him the world of good” but also suggests he needs to concentrate staying central and allow the players around him to set his chances up, instead of drifting onto the left wing.
As said, we now have a visit from Aston Villa, a club that were all but lost in the wilderness but who are now once again, seemingly serious contenders – for what though, I don’t quite know, as they got knocked out of the League Cup last night, and they aren’t going to be winning the Champions or Premier League. Luckily, on that, I care not! For the latest odds though, you can see who the bookies favour, I’m far too myopic and can only see a Spurs win, whoever we play, which probably explains why I’m not a wealthy man or feared by the bookies really!
