Is Postecoglou’s job at Spurs in danger?
It’s increasingly clear that significant change is happening in North London with new manager Ange Postecoglou. They’ve had a turnaround in their approach to every game, and fans with Tottenham tickets are seeing the change in momentum.
But the change in momentum will not be the only deciding factor for the fans, who are still waiting to win silverware. In contrast to the Spurs’ first season, the club has not had a great start and is now back-pedalling with less-than-impressive results. However, Postecoglou’s fate saw new hope with the win in the Carabao Cup, when the side secured a much-needed 2-1 win to advance to the next round. Fans with Tottenham tickets were overjoyed with the win, but questions remain about the future.
Is the former Celtics boss still the preferred choice for the future? This doubt is coming up soon after rumour’s surfaced that the Spurs are looking for possible manager replacements. Earlier, Postecoglou boldly stated that ‘he always wins silverware in his second season’, and the 2-1 win might have extended this notion further. However, a finish less than a Champions League position will still raise concerns over the manager’s job security.
Who are the possible replacements for the job? We take a look at the odds.
Manager Shortlist Odds
9 – Julen Lopetegui
The West Ham Manager sits far out on the list, and he is in deep trouble himself. The Hammers have had a bad start, only having the consolation of the win against West Ham. They could be one of the candidates, but definitely not a strong one.
9 – Gareth Southgate
After leaving the England job, Gareth Southgate is unemployed and can be a prospective candidate. Those with Tottenham tickets can understand how he’d manage the national side by looking at how he managed the national side.
A lot of the nonsense would be ironed out. Kalvin Phillips would be brought in on loan. Dejan Kulusevski would be pushed out to the left for some reason. Spurs wouldn’t be as good as they occasionally are under Postecoglou, but they would never be as bad as they frequently are. Spurs will be constant, but you’ll miss those good nights, such as the one they just had with Manchester United.
5 – Julian Nagelsmann
The former Bayern chief and now German manager might be a good fit, but the chances of him taking the opportunity will be far-fetched, given that he is also running the country’s national side.
5 – Eddie Howe
It would not be beyond the realms of possibility if the timelines were different, but Newcastle’s start to the season makes it harder to see how Howe leaves Newcastle before Ange leaves Spurs, which is surely what would have to happen for this to come into play. A poaching seems wildly implausible.
Fans of Tottenham tickets have become familiar with what Eddie Howe brings to the table, and with a better squad in his hand, he can bring a turnaround. Remember you, Newcastle played the group stage in last year’s UEFA Champions League, although they lost all of their games.
5 – Thomas Frank
Just far, far too sensible. Frank would represent something close to Spurs’ last truly successful managerial appointment with the Southampton-era Mauricio Pochettino.
A manager doing a quietly effective job further down the Premier League food chain won’t do.
2 – Marco Silva
It’s pleasantly surprising to see Silva so prominent in a big next-manager market because he deserves it for his work at Fulham. He’s always a danger for mid-table managers that sustained competence is exactly what big clubs ought to want but can also make you a bit invisible. Spurs fans would, we suspect, kick off about this as an idea, but we’ve heard worse ones.
2 – Roberto De Zerbi
De Zerbi’s Obvious appeal in terms of playing style and philosophy to the fans, but also almost no chance of this happening in the short to medium term, and we grow increasingly convinced Spurs are going to be looking for a manager in the short to medium term.
1 – Graham Potter
He says a fair bit that the last time he was significantly linked with the Spurs, he was rightly able to turn his nose up at it, knowing that something better would come along. Spurs are no better now than they were then, but Potter would, one suspects, be far less sniffy about the idea now. And it is about time Spurs had another former Chelsea boss in charge.
Conte Eyeing Two Spurs Stars
Napoli are reportedly lining up a shock January move for Tottenham defender Radu Dragusin, while the Italian giants are also interested in a top Spurs target. Since his switch from Genoa in January, Dragusin has struggled to find consistent minutes, prompting speculation that he could return to Italy early. Inter Milan have previously been linked with a move for Dragusin, and now he’s on Napoli’s shortlist, but luring him away from North London won’t be straightforward.
According to journalist Paolo Paganini, Napoli are considering a January move for Dragusin and Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu, who has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs. Ange Postecoglou is keen to bring in more competition for Destiny Udogie at left-back, and Tottenham have had their eye on Dorgu for months.
“Be careful because Napoli is ready to make a double move in January. One is Dorgu from Lecce, and the other is Drăgușin from the Premier League,” Paganini told Rai 2. Antonio Conte’s side currently tops Serie A, and the former Tottenham boss is keen to strengthen his squad further as he looks to lift the fourth Italian title of his managerial career.
Dragusin started in Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night – playing the full 90 minutes for the fourth time this season. In what could prove to be a big blow for Spurs, Micky van de Ven hobbled off with an apparent hamstring injury after 14 minutes.
With the Dutch center-back potentially out for the next few weeks, this could be Dragusin’s big chance to nail down a spot in Postecoglou’s starting XI. Recent reports suggest that Tottenham is considering signing a new center-back in January. That’s because Postecoglou wants more options in the position rather than the club covering for any potential outgoings.
