Spurs Signing Hopes as Transfer Window Closure Looms

It is clear that the squad needs more depth

As the January transfer window edges closer to its February 3rd closure, Postecoglu will be hopeful that Spurs can dust off the chequebook and add one or two new signings to try and salvage something from the season.

A lot was made about Postecoglu’s claims that he usually wins something in his second year with a club. Still, injuries have decimated his squad and left his side closer to the relegation zone than European qualification.

That being said, Tottenham are in a good position for the EFL Cup. A 1-0 first-leg win against Liverpool puts them in the driving seat, but bookmakers still fancy Liverpool as the favourite to lift the season’s first silverware.

The top licensed and non Gamstop betting sites have outright prices for the Cup, as well as betting on the second leg. Online betting expert Liliana Costache explains that sites without Gamstop offer greater flexibility as well as unique benefits including enticing sign-up deals.

Liverpool is the 3/10 favourite for the second leg and 7/5 to win the EFL Cup. Newcastle, who have a two-goal lead against Arsenal going into the second leg are the 15/8 second favourite, while Spurs have been priced at around 13/2 as third favourites.

However, the team is still missing a host of first-team stars, including Dominic Solanke, Yves Bissouma, Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven, Brennan Johnson, Destiny Udogie, Timo Werner, Pape Matar Sarr, Cristian Romero, and Wilson Odobert.

The only additions to the squad this January have been 21-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky who joined for £12.5 million from Slavia Prague. The young goalkeeper provides much-needed competition for Fraser Forster following the injury to No.1 Guglielmo Vicario who fractured his ankle in November.

The only other signing has been Yang Min-hyeok from Gangwon FC. The 18-year-old South Korean looks like he will have a bright future, but whether he is ready for the Premier League yet is another question.

Despite Postecogly admitting that the club might not be able to complete any more transfers before the February deadline, he will be hopeful of at least one.

Richarlison’s return from injury is good news for the side as it adds another option up front. However, the Brazilian has been linked with a return to Everton who have recently appointed David Moyes in an attempt to transform the club’s fortunes.

Tottenham won’t be keen to let anyone go unless there is a replacement lined up, but financial fair play rules could impact decisions. While it is clear that the squad needs more depth, the fact that this is because of injury is the major issue.

All of the players currently out will still be on big wages, making it difficult to draft replacements. Some potential attacking options that Tottenham have been linked with include former Manchester City starlet Liam Delap of Ipswich, Jonathan David of Lille, and Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez.

Giminez has been prolific for the Dutch giants since moving from Cruz Azul in 2022, with an average of more than 1 goal every 2 games. The Argentinian-born Mexico international is in demand though, and a move to Italy looks likely with AC Milan heading the list of potential suitors.

The club are also said to be keen for more depth in defence and the wing, with Danish centre-back Thomas Kristensen being linked with a move from Udinese. Leicester and Juventus are also noted to have an interest in the 23-year-old.

Another player who has been strongly linked with a move to Tottenham is Tyler Dibling. The 18-year-old Southampton star is seen as one of England’s top prospects and can operate on either wing.

While he is still young, it’s worth remembering that Gareth Bale was just 17 when he moved from Southampton and we all know how that turned out. The price tag of £55 million could be the issue with this transfer, with the price likely to drop if Southampton are relegated.

If Tottenham are to turn their season around, one or two signings are needed and a bit of luck in the treatment room to get some first-team players back in action.
