What next for Tottenham and Ange?
Tottenham have had another one of those seasons. High hopes, low blows. We can sit here and try and work things out, point the finger of blame, cry for something new because that’s normally what’s needed right? A reboot. A reset. A new face. New hope, fresh highs and then? Well, then come the lows again. The cycle right now appears to be unbreakable. To the point where the media and fanbase are looking towards the Atlantic and beyond. Don’t cry for me Argentina, cry for Tottenham and the desire to bring back Poch.
It’s an emotional mess supporting this football club. I would not bet money on Spurs finding that calm because we are perpetually tethered to chaos and accidental pockets of belief. No grand design here, just keep appointing someone new every couple of seasons until something sticks.
I’d rather spend my money over at Betpanda UK than wager it on what happens next in N17.
But what does happen next?
Let’s review. Ange was the chosen one; our attempt at that reset. We wanted to reclaim our soul and our identity and Angeball gave us that light at the end of the tunnel, post-Conte and Jose and Nuno. But two injury-implosions in a row has left us with the ultimate conundrum – is Ange accountable? Can he find another level once the players are all back and fit or is it the case that this current crisis is masking the reality that he is out of his depth?
The club did something out of the ordinary and didn’t sack him when they have in the past, done exactly that. They backed their man. But their man seems to have lose his mojo and the basic fundamentals are all at sea. Angeball is dead and it’s impossible to know if he’s lost faith in himself, let alone if the club have decided they need a new man.
It’s classic THFC. We needed something new in to galvanise us and now we need someone new in to galvanise the failed galvanised attempt.
Here’s the thing; we need new players in. Nobody knows what our best centre-pairing is in the middle of the park. Cuti Romero has fired shots at Tottenham’s medical team. We need another forward. We need a world class winger. We need that spine and we need to avoid another injury implosion.
But we also need to understand what the club are trying to do in the short to long term. They have made strides, right? Internally they have done positive things with their appointments. Our youth signings have slapped. But where is that extra yard where it matters most? Wages for top players to close the gap on the seasoned contenders.
Ange is going to go down in our history as another fall guy. He’ll be able to blame the injury crisis on his failure and we’ll blame the board for another botched job. But what if they back him for another season? What if they go big in the summer? They finally go big and we have a robust squad fit enough to deal with the bread and butter of the Premier League?
Whilst we scratch our chins and consider the summer months, we have the Europa League to contend. Are we really capable of winning it? Probably not. Unless we suddenly rediscover peak Angeball. And winning it would send us into the Champions League. Which would be pretty funny and scandalous considering we’re a half-baked football club right now.
So, what next for Tottenham and Ange?
Honestly? I don’t have a clue.
