French League, match review and prediction

Already relegated Montpellier and champions PSG will meet at Stade de la Mosson on Saturday night for their match day 33 clash in the 2024-25 Ligue 1 campaign.

As of the time of writing, Montpellier, currently in bottom spot, have picked up 16 points from 31 Ligue 1 matches, while PSG have garnered 78 points from the same number of games and they are already crowned champions.

Montpellier, former Ligue 1 champions, have been relegated from Ligue 1 this season. La Paillade have been disappointing right from the get-go as they suffered a 6-0 bashing at the hands of PSG in their second game of the season, while their season opener ended in a 1-1 draw with Strasbourg. The next two games were also losses to Nantes and Rennes. A first win of the campaign arrived on match day 5 when they came from behind to beat Auxerre at home. Then they went ahead to lose their next five matches to Monaco, Reims, Marseille, Toulouse and Le Havre.

After that run of losses, La Paillade secured their second win of the season against Brest on match day 11. In the final weeks of 2024, they failed to win any games, as they were also bundled out of the Coupe De France by third division side Le Puy-en-Velay. At the turn of the new year, Montpellier also lost to Lyon and Angers before beating Monaco and Toulouse for their first back-to-back wins of the season, and that was the last time they won in Ligue 1. At the time of writing, La Paillade have lost 11 times in their past 12 games. Their recent goalless draw at home to Reims sealed their fate in Ligue 2 for next season. They have scored just 27 goals and have conceded 71 times.

Meanwhile, despite the exit of Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid, PSG were the team to beat in Ligue 1, and they did deliver with multiple games to go. Les Parisiens started the season like a house on fire, winning their first four Ligue 1 games. They first beat Le Havre 4-1 away from home. Kang-In Lee scored the first goal of the new season for PSG, before Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola, and Randal Kolo Muani added further goals in the rout. In the second game of the season, the performance was even better as they thumped Montpellier 6-0 in Paris. Barcola (brace), Marco Asensio, Achraf Hakimi, and Lee were the scorers in the statement result. Luis Enrique’s men then defeated Lille and Brest to complete a quartet of wins in the new season. PSG defeated challengers Marseille 3-0 away from home in Le Classique. Just after the international break, the side defeated Toulouse 3-0 at home to continue their unbeaten run in Ligue 1, as they opened up a six-point lead at the top of the log. If not for the recent defeat to Nice at home, PSG would have been on the verge of completing a domestic season without a loss. Luis Enrique’s men have the league in their bags; they have reached the Coupe de France final, where they will face Reims later in May.

In their UEFA Champions League opener, PSG beat Girona 1-0 before playing a 1-1 draw with Reims to drop points for the first time this season. However, a 3-1 win over Rennes at home got them back on track. Barcola scored on either side of Lee Kang-In’s goal to continue his fine form in the new campaign. Back in the UCL, PSG lost 2-0 to Arsenal, then drew 1-1 with PSV before a 2-1 home loss to Atletico Madrid. In the other UCL games, they lost 1-0 to  Bayern Munich and defeated Salzburg 3-0 on the road. In addition, they had to beat Manchester City and Stuttgart in their final two games to pick a ticket in the next round. Enrique’s men thumped Brest 10-0 on aggregate to set up a date with Liverpool. The Ligue 1 champions edged the tie on penalties and went ahead to beat Aston Villa in the next round to secure a place in the semi-finals of the competition, where they will play Arsenal.

When it comes to Ligue 1, the season is already over for the two teams. While Montpellier are thinking about life in Ligue 2, PSG have their eyes fully focused on the UEFA Champions League as they hope to win it for the first time.

Montpellier and PSG have met 39 times since 2003. Montpellier have won 7 times, PSG  have won 22 times, and the remaining 10 meetings have ended in stalemates.

Team news

Line-ups

At the time of writing, Montpellier have several players out injured. So, their return will not matter anymore as they have been relegated. So, the team is currently handicapped, and only the available players can feature.

Montpellier XI: Lecomte; Ndollo Bille, Mouanga, Omeragic, Mincarelli, Sainte-Luce; Coulibaly, Nzingoula, Ferri, Fayad; Ndiaye.

Luis Enrique’s side have secured the Ligue 1 title already, and they have their focus on something else. So, some key players might be rested in an inconsequential game like this.

PSG XI: Safonov; Hakimi, Kimpembe, Pacho, Hernandez; Zaire-Emery, Lee Kang-In, Vitinha; Doue, Ramos, Barcola.

Prediction

Montpellier will finish bottom of the Ligue 1 log at the end of the season, and nothing can change that. The players, fans, and the management must have started their preparations for life in Ligue 2 already. The champions are coming to town, so get your Montpellier tickets early enough to catch the game.

When it comes to Ligue 1 this season, PSG have gone about their business quite well, and they have wrapped things up early to concentrate on Europe. They won the reverse fixture 6-0, and the head-to-head stands in their favour. Even with a second string side, they should be able to win again.

Montpellier 1-4 PSG
