Napoli will host Cagliari in their final Serie A game of the season at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples on 25th May for a chance to lift the league title.

As of the time of writing, Napoli are top of the Serie A log with 77 points from 35 games. Meanwhile, Cagliari are 14th on the log with 33 points from the same number of matches.

Napoli failed to defend the Serie A title they won two seasons ago last season, and as a consequence, they failed to make it to any of the European competitions this season. So, it was just the Serie A and Coppa Italia for them this campaign as they aim to get back to the top of Italian football. In came former Serie A champion Antonio Conte as the man to lead them after the short-term of Slovakia boss Francesco Calzona.

The season got underway for Napoli with a penalty shoot-out win over Modena in the Coppa Italia. In their first Serie A game of the season, Napoli were soundly beaten 3-0 by Hellas Verona. However, the team bounced back with three consecutive wins. Conte’s men beat Bologna 3-0 at home, a 2-1 home win over Parma, and a 4-0 thrashing of Cagliari on the road. The trip to Turin to face Juventus finished goalless. Back in the Coppa Italia, Napoli thumped Palermo 5-0 to advance once again. Scott McTominay scored once again, with Cyril Ngonge scoring twice in the rout.

The next five games saw Napoli breeze past their opposition to go top of the log. The winning streak started with a 2-0 win over Monza – Matteo Politano and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored in 11 first-half minutes. That result was followed up by a 3-1 win over Como. Former Manchester United man McTominay opened the scoring before Romelu Lukaku and David Neres scored after Gabriel Strefezza’s equalizer for the visitors. The next three games saw Napoli beat Empoli, Lecce, and AC Milan without conceding a goal to keep their fine start to the season going.

The month of November started with a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Europa League champions Atalanta at home before a 1-1 draw with Inter at San Siro just before the international break. Since Napoli returned from that break, they have only lost twice in Serie A – Como and Lazio – and they have not dropped outside the top three.

It has been a fantastic turnaround for Conte and his men, who currently enjoy a three-point lead ahead of defending champions Inter with three games to go. Given the quality of Conte, it is safe to say Napoli will celebrate their second league triumph in three years. At the time of writing, Napoli are on a four-game winning streak, and they have not conceded a goal in 360 minutes. In addition, they also have the best defence in the league with just 25 goals conceded in 35 matches.

On the other hand, Cagliari finished just a point above the drop zone last term, and they came into this season with the desire to start on the front foot and ease the relegation worries. Davide Nicola was appointed the club’s new head coach in July 2024 as they prepared for the new season’s challenge. However, the Islanders started the season on a poor note, drawing their first two games against Roma and Como before losing the next three matches to Lecce, Napoli, and Empoli without scoring a goal.

Meanwhile, the first win of the season came in the Coppa Italia, where they defeated Cremonese 1-0 to move into the next round. That win motivated them to claim their first win in Serie A in a 3-2 win over Parma. Nadir Zortea, Rasvan Marin, and Roberto Piccoli scored for the Islanders in the victory. The next two league games produced a point at Juventus and a win over Torino, a first league win at home.

However, they lost the next three games after that, plus the two afterwards that they failed to win, where they shared the spoils with Milan and Genoa. Cagliari defeated Verona 1-0 in late November to end a run of five games without a win. Juventus knocked them out of the Coppa Italia, while they embarked on a losing run of four games in Serie A. In the first ten Serie A games of 2025, the Islanders won just three games. At the time of writing, Cagliari have won just two of their past seven games in the league.

Napoli have their eyes fixed on the league title at the moment, and Cagliari do not look like a side that can stop them. In the reverse fixture, the Naples side dispatched the Islanders with ease, claiming a 4-0 win. In addition, Cagliari have only beaten Napoli just once in Serie A since 2009.

In terms of the head-to-head, Napoli have won 19 times in the past 33 clashes, while Cagliari have four wins, and the remaining 10 matches were stalemates.

Team news

Line-ups

Napoli are expected to be without Alessandro Buongiorno, who only just made his comeback from a different injury. David Neres and Juan Jesus are also sidelined at the time of writing. With centre-back options limited, Conte might be tempted to go with a 4-4-2 formation again. Key man Scott McTominay, who has scored five goals in his past four games, is expected to feature from the start again.

Napoli possible XI: Meret; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Olivera, Spinazzola; Politano, Anguissa, Lobotka, McTominay; Raspadori, Lukaku

Roberto Piccoli and Nadir Zortea have been the main threat for Cagliari this term, and they will be looking to test the backline of the hosts. At the time of writing, Colombian centre-back Yerry Mina is the Rossoblu’s only confirmed absentee, but Florinel Coman has been training separately due to an Achilles issue, while Sebastiano Luperto, Alessandro Deiola, and Gianluca Gaetano could feature despite their recent minor injury issues.

Cagliari possible XI: Caprile; Zappa, Palomino, Obert; Zortea, Adopo, Makoumbou, Marin, Augello; Luvumbo, Piccoli

Prediction

Since Inter slipped, Napoli have been grinding out wins, and they might need another here. At the time of writing, they are top of the log with a three-point advantage over Inter Milan. Napoli have also won five of their past six Serie A games, and have won the past two fixtures against Cagliari in Naples.

On the other hand, Cagliari have been struggling in recent games, and will be looking to finish the season well. At the moment, they look like a side that will stay up, and that could just be it for them.

By the way, getting Napoli tickets could be a bit tricky as the season is coming to an end.
