What Tottenham Needs to Work On After Their Loss Against PSG in the Super Cup
Last season was Tottenham’s worst ever in the Premier League after finishing one position above the relegation zone. But it wasn’t all bad as the club from North London managed to beat Manchester United to the UEFA Europa League trophy.
This crucial victory allowed Tottenham to play in the UEFA Super Cup against Champions League winners, PSG. Things were going well for the Spurs, but the team failed to keep the lead and ended up losing. This match showed us that the club still needs to work on a couple of areas to become more competitive.
Better Link Up With the Attack – A Necessity for Generating Points and Increasing Popularity at Betting Sites
Although Tottenham did score 2 goals, it did so from set-piece situations. The club did create some good chances from open play, but most of them came from counterattacks.
During these attacking movements, it seemed like the three players up front were alone. The midfielders and full-backs were late in most of these attacks. Because of that, we believe a better support and link up with the attack can bring even more goals for the team.
If it weren’t for Cristian Romero and Micky van der Ven, then Tottenham wouldn’t have scored any goals. And let’s not forget that both of these players are defenders.
It’s no wonder that so many punters wager against Tottenham on PayPal betting sites in the UK. Hopefully, the club acknowledges this issue and deals with it as quickly as possible.
Additionally, Tottenham players must take every chance they get inside the box. In the Super Cup final, they had 9 shots from inside the box and only 2 crossed the goal line. This means that they failed on 7 occasions, and each of them would’ve changed the course of the match.
Consistency Throughout the Entire Match
Tottenham has a serious problem with keeping a leading position. We saw this issue many times last season, where the team went from a dominating stance to failing to keep possession.
The squad needs to be on point throughout the match week after week. But this requires strong mental strength as well as concentration and the desire to win. It seems like the winning mentality vanished right after Tottenham won the Europa League final.
To stay consistent through the entire event, the club will need to rely on a couple of leaders. These players need to be all around the pitch and constantly motivating and pushing their teammates. Some of the players who can take this role are Cristian Romero, Joao Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentancur, and James Maddison.
Now, we must not forget that this squad has an average age of 24.9, which is very young. Only two of its players are at least 30 years of age. We can also see this as an issue, as the team lacks experience. Without older players, the youngsters may struggle with discipline and motivation during the matches.
Better Decision Making in Defence and Midfield
Another major problem that the team needs to work on is decision-making. Particularly in defence and midfield, as mistakes in these areas were crucial against PSG.
The defenders cleared the balls on numerous occasions without considering how to calmly deal with the situations. We also saw the midfielders, including the wingers, lose possession and allow PSG to build an attack.
It’s no wonder Tottenham had a ball possession of just 26% and PSG enjoyed 74%. On top of that, the Spurs had 70% successful passes while PSG had a massive 91%.
Top clubs need to be able to dominate the match, and for that, they need to have the ball on their feet. The defenders and midfielders are crucial for this type of build-up. Without their ability to make the right decisions on whether to pass or make a clearance, this wouldn’t be possible.
This is something that Thomas Frank needs to work on if he wants to be successful with his new team. Let’s see how things will develop in the upcoming weeks. Maybe this was just a poor performance that Tottenham can quickly forget and overcome.
