Will Jack Grealish Find Love if He Leaves the Villa for Spurs?

Not many would have predicted that Spurs would go the entire summer without buying any new players and whilst that may change, there isn’t much time left as the FA’s new ruling means the transfer window slams shut on August 9th. The likely deal to be done is bringing in Jack Grealish from Aston Villa but even that move looks some way off, with only a limited amount of time left to buy players.

Villa manager Steve Bruce admitted it would be difficult for Aston Villa to keep Jack Grealish and looking at Villa’s precarious financial position, it seems they will have to sell their star man. It has been a strange old summer for Aston Villa as well, after the playoff defeat to Fulham looked to signal the beginning of the end for the club.

Owner Tony Xia had hoped to roll a six at the beginning of last season as the Chinese businessman spent on players and increased the wage bill but unfortunately ended up with a five after the Wembley defeat and the end seemed nigh without the safety net of another season of parachute payments. To cut a long story short, none of that looks like happening after Xia sold his controlling stake to new investors who have managed to save the club from financial ruin.

Aston Villa may now be able to keep the lights on but it doesn’t mean they can keep their best players with financial fair play rules dictating that they sell in order to fall in line by operating within their means. That is probably why Spurs are playing hardball with Villa over the price of Grealish after Bruce said Spurs were nowhere near the asking price for the young midfielder.

It makes sense for Daniel Levy to hold out until the eleventh hour given Villa’s hand has been exposed, they have to sell or else face more financial penalties. With that being said, Grealish hasn’t exactly got the pulses racing in North London with many Spurs fans unconvinced by the 22-year-old after an up-and-down career at Villa Park.

The fact that Spurs have been so deprived of signings may mean there is a buzz around Grealish should the move go through. It would be a handy bit of business by Pochettino to bring in Grealish for around £30m and a bargain when you consider the price young English prospects command these days.

Grealish is an extremely tidy player that has an immaculate first touch and a burst of pace to slip past his man. Being under the guidance of a young and modern manager like Pochettino is what he needs at this moment in time if he is to develop into an England international.

The general feeling of being underwhelmed should Grealish sign is also very understandable as Spurs fan had hoped for a big transfer window where they would build a Premier League-winning team. At 16/1 a week before the season kicks off for those who bet online, it looks unlikely that Spurs will have the strength in depth to compete with City and Liverpool to win the league.

What Spurs have done well is hang on to their best players and they will be far from ordinary come the start of the campaign. The presence of so many World Cup stars will also aid the squad’s confidence and undoubtedly help them try and improve on last season’s third-place finish.

Should the Grealish deal go through now or in January, Spurs will be getting a player with a massive amount of potential. A successful few years with Spurs in the Premier League could see his value double which also makes it a shrewd acquisition by the Pochettino.

Grealish’s head looks to be turned and an exit from Villa seems to the only outcome now with the midfielder eyeing up the chance of linking up with Spurs. He won’t arrive with the usual amount of fanfare a player normally does but there’s every chance he will be loved sooner rather than later by the Spurs faithful.
