Are we there yet?

Are we there yet? It is the same old question I’ve been asking myself over the last few years. As a Tottenham fan, I was absolutely convinced that there isn’t a better manager for my club than Poch. Also, I didn’t have any doubts about Spurs winning at least one trophy with him in charge.

However, that didn’t happen. The phrase “are we there yet?” refers to a trophy won, and throughout the recent years, every Spurs’ fan including me, was desperate to see some piece of silverware in Kane’s hands. But instead, we were bound to settle with excellent results, appealing performances, and affection of all the neutral fans around the world.

This season so far has been a nightmare. Bad results, poor chemistry, lots of negative stuff in and around the club. A disaster.

Pochettino ended his historical reign here without a single trophy, and he at least deserved one. That only adds up the frustration because the boys had a chance to make it otherwise.

That Champions League finals against Liverpool immediately went in the wrong direction, and there wasn’t a chance for us to get back on track after an early goal. And okay, we maybe didn’t deserve to win it, but what about the English Premier League? After all, we were one of the most constant squads in the league between 2016 and 2018.

Each time there was a new champion with the previous ones fading away during the next campaign. Tottenham was the only one to stay at the top, providing attractive football, but always finishing second or third. For two years in a row, we were the highest-scoring team and the one with the best goal difference, but still the title was always ending at some other place. Just to remind you, we won nine out of possible 21 points in the last rounds of the 2016 title race with Leicester.

Bad luck or something else I wouldn’t know, but it really is a pity that Pochettino couldn’t lift at least one trophy.

Now we have a guy who knows how to win titles. He owns pretty much all of them, regardless of the competition. Mourinho has the quality, has the experience, but according to many came to North London at the wrong moment.

Along with all the stuff mentioned, the situation with Eriksen is not good at all, and the board will probably sell him during the winter transfer window. The guy who was supposed to be the brain of the team decided that it would be much better for him to go somewhere else.

Also, Harry Kane’s injury is devastating, and the leader of the Spurs will be sidelined for some time. His issues with health severely damaged Tottenham’s chances for making significant results, but with the Special One at the wheel, you never know.

The Portuguese manager is one of the best ever motivators in football. There are various stories about how he managed to fire up his crews before big games. Be sure that Mourinho isn’t going to give up fighting for the trophies no matter what happens. It is in his DNA, that winning mentality, and that is the main difference between him and his predecessor.

Plus, there is one thing you all forget. Tottenham has the perfect team for his style of play – strong midfielders and quick forwards, who are capable of executing fast transitions and counter-attacks.

And when times comes, especially in the knockout stages of those competitions Spurs’ participate, he will start using his old tools. Plus all the mind games he has prepared, just waiting for the perfect moment to pull the out of his sleeve.

While the FA Cup isn’t in its full swing, as there still are numerous clubs form the English Championship, English League One and other tiers, the challenges in the Champions League are serious as hell.

The Spurs got the best possible opponent from the first pot during the draw for the Round of 16 – RB Leipzig. When looking at the names of other potential rivals (Barca, Bayern, PSG, Juve), this was one of the rare situations in which lady luck was on our side. From here, it is up to Mourinho and the lads to rise to the occasion, and do their part of the job.

And once you reach the quarterfinals, everything is possible from there. Remember Liverpool in 2005. Why not repeat the same? After all, this team is way better than the Reds back then. Plus, there is a manager whose mindset is not allowing any desperation, and who often provided results going against all the odds.

Also, don’t forget the above-mentioned English FA Cup. We’ve reached the semifinals twice under Poch; maybe it is a time to go further. If winning the UCL would be unrealistic, capturing the oldest football competition in the world is pretty doable.

So, no matter how it looks at the moment, the season is not over yet. And for your info, yes we know that appears to be an awful one, without anything bright in it. But you know how they say – after darkness comes the light.

And about that question from the beginning, “are we there yet?”

Well, I would say very close.
