A decent proven striker sure .... but a last minute panic buy just to say we have a new striker .... that never works out well ... look at the strikers signed in January ...

Kaba Diawara - the new Anelka lol
Lewis Grabban
Cenk Tosun
Andrej Kramaric
Andy Carroll
Wilfried Bony
Alexis Sanchez
Steven Naismith
Guido Carrillo
Will Hoskins
Savio Nsereko

That's eleven different EPL clubs with absolute shockers of striker signings in January ... there have been some good ones Suarez, Zaha (to Palace) Sturridge but far more bad ones .....

If we're not 100% sure we should wait until the summer, in Spurs terms it's not that far away.

It's not about the amount of time we'd have to wait until we can next sign someone - it's that during that time we will effectively be relegated from the top 4 if we don't sign a striker, and it is financially and in profile like a relegation.

Who do we buy that guarantees the goals to ensure top 4? I’m all for it if we can get someone who will hit the ground running. I maintain it’s not as easy as just signing any old fucker to come in and make it look simple. Do you look abroad or go for proven PL talent? It makes my head hurt.

Liverpool seem to have performed pretty well without a striker. Can Alli step up and be 'coached' to play in the more advanced role? Or do you really think Giroud etc would offer more?

SON - ALLI - MOURA
vs
MANE - FIRMINO - SALAH

Our issue has typically been our ability to get the ball up the field quickly enough before defences get organised.

LO CELSO - NDOMBELE - GEDSON
vs
WJANALDUM - HENDERSON - OX

On paper, I like our midfield 3 better. However, all new players and it will take some time before they learn to play together.
I like your idea very much, especially the midfield three. As pointed out our boys will need time and one of the strengths of Liverpool is that the team has played consistently together for the past 2 years. But I think the key that makes them work so deadly is VVD. We need an improved backline to support our offensive assets

I don't think any of the makeweights we are linked with guarantee top four at all ... maybe a fit Bale would make it possible but even then we would be relying on City, Chelsea or Leicester screwing up.

If buying players guaranteed top four then everyone would get it right every year ... hmmmmm. Having a striker is obviously better than not having one but having a crap one won't help much at all.

Thomas Muller - 6 month loan deal. To be announced in next hour. This is proper ITK stuff (as in I just pulled it out of my arse).

Muller 6month loan rumors (that I made up) gathering pace with BBC and Bild reporting (in no way relating to Spurs) that Muller is unhappy with losing his place in Bayern team. Muller is looking to boost his chances of making German squad this summer and is keen on the move.

Clubs need to agree structure of move as Spurs want option to buy but Bayern just want a straight loan.

Expecting some movement on this today.

(This ITK stuff is an absolute doddle).

I just got off chat roulette where a mysterious individual told me we're potentially going to enquire about an initial first bid for the possible transfer of a man who kicks a ball for a living in the next 16 hours.
This was backed further by the next gentleman I connected to who was furiously masturbating.

It may be a rarely held opinion, but I think the "damage" of the windows with no transfers is significantly exaggerated in general. If you look at our transfer business in the recent era (post-Bale), we're typically looking at 4-5 in and 4-5 out combined over the summer and winter windows. In general, at least 1, if not 2, of the outgoings are quality contributors we'd rather keep but can't. Of the 4-5 incomings, we're basically 50-50 on whether or not they make meaningful contributions. About 1 in 5 transfers we actually hit on something good and get a quality squad fixture from.

Obviously you can't forecast anything perfectly, and maybe we'd have signed the next great thing...its entirely possible, but most likely given our recent track record we'd have traded 1 key contributor, 1 decent squad option, and 3 dead weights for...1 key contributor, 2 decent squad options, and 2 flops.

Likely Out (going on contemporary reports): Toby, Dembele, Rose, Sissoko, GKN
Likely In (rosiest picture I can realistically paint): Martial, Grealish, Lascelles, Sessegnon (eventually signed anyway), Barrios

So we basically have the same squad we have now except Toby = Lascelles, Moura = Grealish, and Barrios = Ndombele. Add Martial to the mix as our 1 big hit. How many points better off are we? Not a meaningful amount in my mind. That summer certainly isn't the difference between us winning trophies or not.

Nice try Dan. Saw through it while reading he first line though, sorry!

Two players we've been linked with summer moves for this window, Robin Koch and Pierre-Emile Hojlberg both have contracts expiring 2021. I wonder if that's a factor that come so into us having a butchers at them.

Hojlberg also smashes Winks statistically in pretty much every department on whoscored comparions ratings so if he's knock down with a year left it makes sense.

The cost of missing out on Top 4 is far greater than spending a few extra bob now and getting a proper player. For someone who professes faux knowledge in economics - I find it astonishing you've missed that part

It’s not just goals though. Think back to the hoofing of the balls up to Moura and try not to hide your eyes....it’s a desperate situation when a top team cannot get up the field quickly and or hold the ball. it’s affecting everyone and everything. A focal point was the most pressing bit of business as of 2 January. Here we are 29 days later and nothing of note in the key area. And supporters justifying Levy by now saying it would be a last minute panic buy....it’s not. This should have been sorted weeks ago.

Bergwijn is a winger, and Gedson is certainly no striker, ones replaced Eriksen, one Sissoko. So that gap up top is still there. I don’t particularly see this squad as “stronger” from our business so far.

At the start of this process it was claimed signing someone of quality in January is really difficult. Then yesterday I was reading how signing someone late in January is almost impossible. Blah blah fucking blah. Excuses. You Pay the money, you get someone. Would it really be that hard to get say Edouard from Celtic ? Sadly, anyone claiming you can’t buy good strikers in January needs to have that uncomfortable look down the road at the wankers....

I accept Football is not as easy as we think, but it’s not as complicated either. Always seems money talks.

assuming no one comes today, which would be my bet, don’t expect to see anything in the summer until end of August, and then it’s going to be “difficult” because we are not in Champions league, again excuses at the ready.

obviously I am down on the club as this has been a rotten season, which was totally avoidable, but to seemingly fail to back the manager and indeed the fans yet again is indefensible. Here’s hoping we get someone, if not don’t expect to feel those eye widening prices are justified on match day.

Exactly, they’ve won most of their games by 1 goal and relatively low scores.

That’s a solid defence
