Transfers Summer 2020 Transfer Thread

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

That spend was boosted by the near 100 mill we made by reaching the CL final. Without CL football there would have been have been very little to spend Covid or no Covid. Levy is very spend resistant.

This was a short review from the THST meeting at the beginning of March, pre lockdown

Speaking in a scheduled meeting with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust last week, Levy also indicated Spurs will look to continue producing marquee players, rather than buying them.

The minutes of the meeting said: "Daniel Levy (DL) responded that Spurs have a net base spend of £200m in the last four years on players but maintained there is little correlation between money spent and winning. It's about making the right decisions.

"Funds were ring-fenced for the summer, however not qualifying for the Champions League would have an impact all round.

"DL felt it was wrong to say Spurs didn't pay competitive wages. Spurs are a club that makes superstars. Jose Mourinho wants to bring in players who give everything for the club because they recognise the opportunity."
Makes superstars then sells them for the right price.

Levy is right when he says that spending big doesn't mean winning. Everton, United and West Ham have spent big in recent years, Fulham got relegated after spending £100m. It's not that simple.

We need to buy the right players, that is where we have gone wrong. With our limited resources we cannot spend almost £100m on an injured Sessegnon and a flabby Ndombele and have them do nothing for a whole season. We have to stop getting fleeced, I hope Bergwijn and PEH are the start of a more sensible transfer strategy. Two good players with potential for a reasonable price. I will be happy if we make 2 or 3 more signings like that and leave the massively risky mega-signings to other clubs.

All our successes in the transfer market have come from the under £25m category, Modric, Dembele, Eriksen, Dele, Dier, Trippier, Son, Toby, Jan, Lloris, etc we all got great value from them. Every single player who cost more than that has struggled.

Was thinking the other day - have we ever had a good record signing? Historically the majority of our most our expensive signings have disappointed tbh.

What about if the right player will cost 60/70m what do we do?, Move to plan B or C just because they cost under 25m.
Surely when or if the finances are there, which is why the new stadium was built allegedly, does that preclude us from buying just because they cost a bit.

To an extent, but not really.

The teams you mention are smaller teams, left behind and with no "core" of good players. They over spend on smaller names players in the hope they will keep them up. The likes of Man City and Liverpool have a core of good players and any big spend is to enhance a core, not a desperate attempt to make it big.
