It's not unlikely Hugo will have a period where he doesn't play. If you have a choice over Hart or Gazza which would you pick? My gut says Gazza. We certainly need three decent keepers on the books, i'm happy for a vintage back-up and a young prospect as third choice. Hart in his peak wasn't terrible, his confidence and concentration seems shot though. It's a tricky one
Until last season Hugo played 40+ games every season with no problems, our third choice keeper starting is rarer than rockin' horse shit. If we sell Gaza we will have Lloris, Hart and Whiteman who's a decent lad having been England under 16/17/18 and 19 keeper ... should be enough and we should be giving Whiteman some cup game experience anyway, all he's managed with the first team so far is on the bench.

Not sure if Brandon Austin is back with us as well, he was out on loan with Viborg he's another highly rated young keeper.

Neither of the youngsters are 1st or 2nd choice material yet but they are two decent back-ups if the shit really hits the fan.

Historically we've been very lucky with his lack of injuries and suspensions:

Premiership games missed
19/20 = 17
18/19 = 5
17/18 = 2
16/17 = 4

But injuries can and do happen as we saw with last season. Having a decent reserve keeper is crucial. Would you put Whiteman ahead of Hart? Would really like to see a young prospect given first team opportunities.

Best case scenario the rumors are true that Mourinho handed the club a list of realistic targets that he really wanted

but is that how it works? I thought the manager generally identified areas where improvements are needed. It is then the job of the scouting and development crew to identify suitable players that have the stats and attributes that the team need. These options are then presented back and if suitable clubs and agents are contacted.

Honestly no, as a keeper you can't beat experience most don't hit they're prime until 30 ... I'd have no problem using Whiteman or Austin on the bench if we lost either Hugo or Hart but starting him in the EPL that would be a huge gamble, keepers rely on confidence the EPL can be very brutal on a 21 year old. Remember Peter Enckelman at Aston Villa he was a massive prospect but never really got past that first game mistake, or the legendary Adam Bogdan at Liverpool possibly the worst EPL keeper ever, think he's in Hungary now ... wouldn't want our youngsters to follow that path.

But I would play one or both in cup games, at least the early rounds or dead rubbers.

I've answered this question many times, there aren't many RB's out there who I'm in love with right now, but I'd still rather have one that's younger, has some scope, and can retain some inherent value, who we won't be struggling to get off the payroll in two years time, than an older one I don't love much either.

If we are selling Aurier for 20m Eur, then why not spend 15m Eur and get Hakimi - another who's played as a RWB but has also played as a RB.

Back up option, Atal is a player, like Doherty, who's been used predominantly as a RWB, but is much quicker than Doherty. Would almost certainly cost less/same and is about 4 years younger.

I really don't see Doherty as much of an upgrade on Aurier generally. And I say that as someone who doesn't like Aurier loads.

Doherty has 2 attributes your suggestions dont have :

1 PL proven
2 Qualifies as HG replacing an Overseas Trained player = Freeing up space for another Overseas Trained player.

Atal just come back from injury, not sure he's played since ?

Its about building a squad, so as I say, the only compromise with Doherty is replaing a 27 year old with a 28 year old. Not ideal but I get that JM wants experienced players - and that's the compromise with hiring JM.

Of course JM is also building the squad in a different way - Tanganga (CB) played last season, Cirkin and White name tagged as playing in 20/21 and played v Ipswich (and both looked fine), as well as Bowen and CCV playing against Ipswich whilst Skipp, Eyoma and Parrott loaned out to get experience. Of those 8 youngsters I'd like to think that in 2 or 3 years time there are 2/3/4 Club Trained players who will form part of the squad going forward (and JM knows we will need some of them in the squad now given the hectic schedule we have this season).

So 28 year old Doherty is signed but JM commits to getting several youngsters through into Spurs first team squad - think that's a win win compromise for both points of view.

If we can actually get Doherty in for a similar amount as we can ship out Aurier then I will be over the fucking moon! Levy do your thing you little bald maniac.

I’m not a Levy fan boy but if he gets a penny more for Serge than we pay for Doherty, all the ENIC out brigade need to go back in to hibernation. Equivalent to trading Neymar and Lucas!
