Reguilon is great going forward but plenty good in defence. Sanchez makes our defence better imo. May have to curb Doherty's attacking instincts a bit but he's a smart player and should learn to pick his moments. Hopefully Bergwijn can do enough in upcoming games to nudge ahead of Lucas in the pecking order, he's seemed a bit risk averse at times.

The back 3 and front 3 are clear, the wingbacks are presumably Doherty and Reguilon, but who would the 2 be?

Why is Davies starting over Toby in a back 3? Left-footed CB is not that important.
Where is the DM, PEH is not a sitting DM. In that formation Mourinho is more likely to shoehorn Winks and have PEH and Lo Celso.

Toby has been a great player for us but it is looking more and more like he is ready for the knackers yard, he is using his experience to cover for the fact he is slower than evolution but there are limits to that.
I think having a left footed centre back on the left side is a big bonus, it was one of the great things about the Toby/Jan combination. I thought Mings would have been worth looking at for this reason.
We don´t have two top CB´s at the moment, let alone 3 - and let alone good squad depth for the position. Besides that, Jose has never used a back 3/5 on a regular basis - in any of his previous clubs.
Don´t get me wrong, I think the point of this thread is absolutely valid. I´m also very curious to know how Reguilon and Doherty will play together. But I really don´t see a back 3/5 as the solution.

A left-footed CB works only when the left-footed CB is actually good, and Davies isn't good enough. Sure, it was great when we had Jan Vertonghen, but plenty of big teams have operated without a left-footed CB and done just fine in recent years, see: Real Madrid, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich
There is not a good reason to play Davies over Toby at CB in any formation when both are fit.
He is known for that formation but with far more defensively solid full backs and a designated Dm, box to box mid and attacking mid that contributes in terms of goals. That formation has Hojbjerg who isn't really a dm, N'dombele who.is box to box but doesn't seem fit enough to play that role in this league and Lo'Celso who is creative but won't contribute in terms of goals much.
With our squad (if Bale and Reguillon sign) 3-4-3 is what suits us best imo.
All a matter of opinions I guess, I think the criticism of Dier and Davies has been well over the top recently.
We need a proper DM with a decent passing range. We have two quality full backs, decent attacking players and in Lo Celso and Ndombele in theory a good attacking midfield.
We don’t have anyone at the base I rather sort that out that CB. We have a good number of CB’s although we could do better but we don’t have a Allen, Fabinho type player. PEH is more a Henderson and Winks is an 8 really.

I think that´s a very good lineup - and far more likely than a back 3/5.
I don´t see us playing a traditional midfield 3, though - it´s more like 2 + 1 (Hojbjerg-Nombele; Lo Celso ahead of them).
The only problem is, with two very offensive FB´s (no more Ben Davies as a third CB) and with Bale and Sonny up front (no more hard working Lucas), I feel like Ndombele could end up being sacrificed in midfield - lots of spaces to cover in that team. I´m not saying Ndombele shouldn´t start. But I´m not seeing many people realize that if our team becomes more offensive - and much more exposed without the ball -, this could be really bad news for him.
You are right, Hojbjerg isn't a DM, but at least it (433) makes Hojbjerg's remit far more conducive to his very limited skill set.

Why do we need a sitting DM? Can’t we just have a “DM” that is a specialist at breaking up plays before the opposition gets to our final third?
Yeah, let's change the formation for one player you weapon.
I think the idea is that if PEH is further up the pitch than guys like Ndombele and GLC then it is harder for them to make the risky plays they need to to get the offense going because if they lose the ball it puts our back 4 under a lot of pressure.
Having a more classic DM that can play behind them and clean up those mistakes and move into the areas they vacate if they are going on a run up the field opens them up to be able to play a lot more of an attacking style.
The last thing we need is Ndombele and GLC turning into Winks and back passing because they are worried Jose will pull them if they make an errant pass.

If so I would say that the current formation isn't working, so a switch up may not be a bad idea. And as I said in OP, 2 strikers seemed to suit us towards the end of last season.
