Ex-Spurs Player Emerson Royal

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Emerson looks ok attacking against clubs that don’t park the bus where their is space but he doesn’t really beat players much in tight areas, he isn’t a winger. Against smaller teams we need Sessegnon on the left and I would take Adama or Lamptey on the right, more naturally attacking players who can disrupt and shift a defence.
What is the evidence Sess can do this?

I know he scored a few tap ins for Fulham in the champo years ago but haven't see much since. He's not much of a dribbler and doesn't beat people. Probably has a better final ball and attacking instincts than Emerson I will admit.

Tbh I'm not sold on any of our current crop as Conte wingbacks.

I don’t know if it’s a Conte thing but the whole team seems more reluctant to send in an early ball since he got here.

Perhaps, but in the case of Emerson I'm talking broader than his passing/crossing ability..... Alluding to a general hesitation with him thinking "What next.... Dribble....? .....Give and go? ......Cross?".

He doesn't seem like a very instinctual player (so far) and my theory could well be what hampers his passing/delivery game?

The hope would be that as he becomes more comfortable with what's being asked of him, the players around him and his surroundings in general, we will see a more proficient player.

Not sure that’s the right move. As currently constructed we are a play quick smash and grab team. Our passing moves do not improve with age.

Not sure what you mean by this? ....You think Conte-ball will not improve further as the months pass? ....The players have grasped as much as they're likely to already?

That’s the opposite of what I mean. In both player development and hopefully recruitment we are evolving toward a more controlled way of playing in possession but to win a game tomorrow I think our current squad is probably best off trying to play the killer ball up to our front two immediately, within reason.

Jose’s a cunt and a dinosaur but I think his initial assessment of the best way for this bunch of players to score goals was basically correct.

I don’t want to seem overly negative on Conte, I think he’s been brilliant and we’re full of energy and ideas in possession in a way we haven’t been since Poch went sour and with time and backing I think we’re really going places. However I also want to beat Chelsea on Wednesday and with the Moura and Hojbjerg and Emerson we have I don’t think the extra touch and time to survey the field is helpful. There’s a reason the aggressive and uncomplicated Skipp has shone thusfar.

I agree but I think the plan in the summer was to buy him as a centreback and not a fullback. We were hoping to move on one of the current lot, bring in him and Romero and a right back to replace Aurier who wanted to leave.

Seemed to me the plan was the opposite. Play him as RB/RWB and a back-up CB (with Japh also having a similar remit).

Certainly did not get the impression we were targeting a CB partnership of Tomiyasu + Romero or Kounde.

Aerial crosses aren't exactly the most efficient way to reach a teammate. Basically every team's fans think their wide players can't cross.

It's been said about every fullback or wide player I can remember us having except Bale and maybe Trippier (though he got slated off for plenty else).

Pointless without context. An overhit cross that reaches a teammate or a floated cross that results in a challenged 12 yard soft header counts the same as a perfect cross for an open net. Some combination of this with xA per successful cross might tell more.

Watching Emerson you can see that he doesn’t have a ton of curl on the ball and it’s not whipped in with above average pace or accuracy. He also isn’t the best at getting crosses off while under pressure. If anything, this shows that this stat matters very little.

Then you think about the crossing chances they get. Players like lamptey and TAA probably create the a lot of their own opportunities whereas Emerson only crosses if a teammate finds him open. This is a huge deal and can determine how good of a fit a certain player is.

Compare Trippier and Lamptey. Very different crossers… if the central mids break the opponent down and get the wing back a wide open cross, we’d take trippier all day. But if we pass it wide and the wing back is marked tight, what will trippier do? Pass it backwards… lamptey will take the player on and could create something from nothing.

This. Every team complains about their crossing to some degree.

One that reaches one of our players...
ideally yes, but it's difficult to aim at a moving striker, or where he's going to be.

There's definitely a danger zone for the defence, close to the 6 yard box, but not so that the keeper comes and collects.

So, also with away curl (which is why first time crosses from cut backs can work - there's curl that comes automatically).

Then there's the whipped cross. This can be closer to the danger zone because the keeper won't have as much time to collect.

Then the first time cross. The full back doesn't control it first. This has 2 benefits - the defenders don't get advance warning of the cross. Also, if the full back controls it, it becomes VERY obvious that the cross is coming in....NOW. The back 4 is ready.

Trippier's first time crossing could be superb, especially the volleyed cross. The action of cushioning the volleyed cross was so similar to the action of controlling the ball that defenders just weren't ready. But Kane often was because he would be hoping for it. He couldn't anticipate it, but if it was first time, then it would look like it. Lineker and the foxes in the box don't know where the ball is going to go. They just know the danger areas and head there, knowing that if the ball ends up there then they've got a really good chance of scoring. With someone like Greaves it probably came naturally. With Kane and Lineker it might be that they think things through, or are coached well, and work like fuck to better themselves.

Ziege was another one whose first time crossing was deadly. I also pointed out the very early cross in the Brighton Everton game was first time - 2 seconds later the ball's in the net and a historic win at a ground where they've got nothing in the past.

Another benefit of an early cross - the first defender can't cut it out.

So - how does Emerson rate against these metrics.

First time crosses? I can't remember one.

Hitting the first defender? Yes he managed that. Despite having all the space you could ever want.

Whipped in? No - floated.

Curled away? No.

Danger zone? No.

How anyone thinks his crossing was in any way decent - you watched a different game. He had the freedom of the park and all the time he could want, and against a defence that havent kept a clean sheet for a while, not one goal from a cross, and not even a clear cut chance that I can recall.

Conte will rightly be furious at it all, pretty much said as much. He'll either coach it into this guy, or he'll be replaced. He's managed to get a tune out of Sanchez (!!!!), Dier (ditto), Winks (!!!!!), Moura, Dele (Against Dippers). So hopefully he can do the same with this guy.

All the practice in the world won't improve some players' crossing, good delivery is a skill that not everyone has. Would be pleasantly surprised if Emerson's got much better at all at his age.

So do I get this straight - you are willing to give up on 22 year old player in his 1st season in EPL...

But at the same time you endlessly admire an attacking player who has had 158 games in EPL and has scored 7 and assisted 16 goals ?!?!

Cannot write this stuff... just cannot.
