Hey

Hey mate,

I want to give some context to your stats. When I was doing my coaching badges with the London FA a decade ago, I remember the head coach explaining that the area of the pitch with the highest turnover is around the edge of the box.

Wingers who cut inside are the most likely to be dispossessed because they are moving from areas of space to areas that are tightly defended. Defending 101 is to protect the goal after all.

The most dispossessed player in the PL? Zaha.
Second in EPL? Allen St Maximim.
The most dispossessed player at Liverpool? Salah.
Second at Liverpool? Mané.
Most at City? Sterling.
Most at spurs? Kane.

Being dispossessed a lot is not an indicator of low quality but just a feature of playing in a high risk- high reward area of the pitch.

I think this probably puts paid to the argument that he commits fouls because he gets angry.

I don’t know if he’s slow but you can see from the footage that he thinks and plays the ball quickly. He’s the closest thing to an Eriksen replacement we’ve had for a few years.

Let’s give him a chance!
When John Beck was manager at Cambridge, he fined any winger that cut inside.

He acted on the views of his statistician who produced the percentage lost in the act.

Being dispossessed a lot isn't an indicator of low quality if you are a player you tries a lot of low % actions, but he's being easily/cheaply dispossessed a lot whenever I watch him. He really doesn't hit the 'high reward' part of that equation at all regularly, he's just very frustrating. ASM, Salah, Sterling etc manage to create dangerous chances regularly, he has not.

If he had a high number of dribbles completed, a high number of key passes, or a lot of goals/assists it would be forgivable. But as it is he is simply losing possession for his team whilst offering very little from a creative or goalscoring perspective. This may change of course if he re-discovers his mojo at a different team, if/when he is a Spurs player he'll have my full support. As of now though it's a signing I am concerned about based on what I have seen, and based on what Juventus fans think of him.

Interesting !

I think that area of the pitch is always going to end up being a place of high turnover. If you want to score consistently you have to have a plan to get the ball there. If you want your wingers to hug the touch line and cross the ball then you’re also going to have high turnover !

The comments from Juve supporters are concerning, but its pretty obvious they can be an obnoxious bunch. It comforts me that Conte has wanted him before, and apparently wants him now. Let’s give the guy a chance.

Hmmm… if you’ve seen a decent number of games he’s played in then I’ll defer to that judgement.

I’d be sceptical about drawing strong conclusions off ambiguous stats though. You can paint anyone to be bad with the right stats. Kane is the most dispossessed player at Spurs, he has scored 5 goals from an xg of 7.99, and has just 2 assists. That is a £20/25m player if that’s all you’re looking at.

I’m going to trust Conte who has wanted to coach this player since he was at inter, the fact he won série a young player of the year, the fact he can clearly think and play the ball quickly in attacking situations and that he is still only 21.

Good point and as you mention, quickness in the game is about a lot more than running blindly like Theo Walcott.
For someone being as slow as some posters claim, it is surprising how often he is able to beat his man.

I've seen him play in a decent amount of games over the past couple of seasons.

Kane's having the worst season of his career though, and it's an anomaly. Kulusevski had one great season and then has been this way statistically for a while. Stats can be misleading but the eye test with him isn't looking great either, not to me at least.

And yes, I agree, I trust Conte if this is genuinely a player he has requested. He deserves a chance when he is a Spurs player. Maybe in the correct role there's a player (though I never see him being a PL winger) but right now I view it as an underwhelming signing. That's just my opinion.

So why is Juve selling this 'incredible' player and who else is interested in Mr incredible?
Yes why are they? Why did they sell cancello to city? Why was de bruyne and salah sold? Its football.
Either you are able to spot quality or you’re not. If you cant see it you may want to rely on conclisions such as he must be shit because he is being sold but it really isnt that simple.

It seems backward to want Kulusevski to do well and to see how he gets on.

Let's just hope he fails and start slagging him off now.

Avoids hope and saves a bit of energy and RSI.
If he try's but fails I wont be too angry but Ndombele didn't even try and failed and that did make me angry.
I'd rather someone with less quality giving 100% than someone with massive ability that gives fuck all.
Cant say I know too much about any of these players so my mind is open and hopeful at the moment.

To be honest, the fact we’ve tied the mandatory purchase to CL qualification makes this a little more palatable.

Lot of fucking money though for someone that looks alarmingly slow.
he’s definitely not slow. He is not electric, but he’s faster than he looks because he’s tall. He probably straight away comes in as our second most dangerous passer next to Harry Kane.
