Remember "we can't sign anyone because nobody would improve our starting XI"?

One of the most hallucinogenically wrong takes in internet history.

.......But then if you stick to the truth of what was said; which was that we couldn't afford/attract the level of player needed to improve what those in our starting XI whilst the stadium was being build, then it becomes a far less outrageous and ridicule-worthy claim.

Less ridicule for the club, more ridicule for the custard-brained bootlickers capable of believing such an absolute load of horseshit.

If we sold Kane and Dier, this could be our team next year:

Rich
Son - Kulu - Gil
Bent - Sarr
Udog-Ben-Rom-Djed

If we sold Son too, we could do this

Gil - Rich - Kulu
Udog - Bent - Sarr -Djed
Ben - Rom - Dav

The future could be exciting- but only if the club accept a rebuild as necessary and embrace it. (I put some names above that people will say should be sold. We won't be able to sell all the deadwood this summer, so we need to play triage and figure out least-worst choices and those sorts of things.)

I get what you're shooting at... As I posted in another thread:

???
Spence / Rom / ??? / Udogie
Biss / Sarr / Bent
Kulu / Rich / Gil

......All the right side of 25. All have room to grow. All bought by Fab.

The right manager could kick off something nice with that.

It was really silly and very, very untrue.

Hugo
Walker / Toby / Jan / Rose
Vic / Dembele
Eriksen / Dele / Son
Kane

Replacing any of those would have been v.expensive at the time given the level that they were playing at during that period.

No-one claimed it was impossible to improve upon.

Even in that period we were spending not insignificant amounts.... eg, Dav 40m, Sissoko 30m, Aurier 25m... We were just doing it badly.

Guys need to relax, plenty of time left to get a CCB. LCB, RWB, GK, CCM.

Our chairman isn't incompetent, he wouldn't go an entire window without signing anyone

There were lots of periods between that being the XI that we could comfortably have improved the team and did not .. and a lot of transfers we messed about on haggling ala Porro which could've got us over the line.

The lineup was generally good - the drop off in terms of depth awful. And we then allowed the team to decline without really doing much succession planning which sucked too. ENIC saw the money rolling in from comfortable top 4 finishes and did the absolute bare minimum until the money tap ran dry. It was rubbish long-term planning.

The original comment was about first XI.

What I've said is entirely true. What was originally claimed to have been said was not.
