Transfers January 2023 Transfer Thread. The Big One

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Mourinho has a very... convenient memory of things.

Yeh, it's not like him to play the victim is it. LOL

We chose to spend 12 on Rodon, but wouldn't part with 5m for option A???

There's no logic to that and what was being reported at the time contradicts his version also.

Regardless, KMJ joins a long list missed chances by our transfer committee, if there is one.

We miss out of KMJ and end up bying Rodon. We miss out on Kvarataskhelia and eventually pay for Gil(?). etc. etc.

Big money or not, the hit rate is just abysmal. Outside of Kulu and Benta, it's been like a decade since we've pulled off some real clever transfers. Feels like a lifetime ago that we managed to sign the likes of Eriksen, Vertoghen etc. for pennies.

Fair......

Attacking wise neither is better but as far as I can see Tomiyasu is much more composed on the ball which enables their build up from the back, and he's also more reliable defensively.

We dread the sight of Emerson, and they (a much better team) look forward to having him return from injury.
Both are pretty good defensively, Emerson is better in attack and not constantly injured. Our fans hating him is evidence for fuckall, our fans hated Trippier as well.

Fair......
There's way less risk of paying 13M for a Championship player than there is paying 5-10M for a Chinese Super League player.

He might've gotten the teams wrong, but the story is very believeable.

Even more annoying was that he had to settle for Doherty instead.

Rerun with different characters.

We could've had Takehiro Tomiyasu for 18 million. We haggled for 15 million plus Add-ons and lost him to Woolwich. Levy and his scouts then had a flash of brilliance and bought Emerson Royal for 22 million.

Tomiyasu = £56k a week (£2,910,000 4 years)
Royal = £41k a week (£2,170,000 4 years)

£18m + (£2,910,000 x 4) = £29,640,000
£22m + (£2,170,000 x 4) = £30,680,000

Paid £4m more but the package is on only £1.04m more over a 4 year contract. If it was 4 years it's almost the same.

That's quite close

But let's look at others.
Richarlison = £4.68m per year
Jesus = £13.78m per year

I can't be arsed to go to into it, but that's why they signed a title winner and we signed someone from relegation fodder and that's why our £60m was actually the cheaper signing.

I agree. I'm just making the point that most fans believe we haven't spent on what we need. Its not that they think we haven't spent. They way Levy spends leaves us not spending for more than 500 days, then he spends and buys absolute crap.
Well it looks like he did it again with buying Spence, even though Conte said it was ''ok''.

He could have put that money towards Porro, and had him playing here already. I'd say Porro would be a good purchase, it might not even happen now.

As we already know , modern football is well and truly fucked
I’m reminded of this quote from the Secret Footballer (Dave Kitson anyone?) from his second book that came out in 2013. Back then you could see the way the wind was blowing but as time’s passed it’s sad how close his prediction was/is to reality:

“The glory of winning in battle still exists in football, but it is a glory that is increasingly driven by people in tinted-glass boxes wearing severe suits. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with that for now. I am happy to follow football as long as what is being offered on the pitch is entertaining. But there will come a time when the only way to push financial figures skyward - particularly TV revenues - will be to play more matches against the top teams. And my guess is that this will lead to two things.

First, the Champions League will temporarily revamp itself so that the top teams compete on a league basis in what were the knockout rounds. Then, when this approach fails, the top European clubs will reject Uefa, thrash out their own TV deals and create their own league - a league in which financial fair play rules do not exist and the Champions League is truly a league of the world's championship-winning clubs. As my father often says when we are discussing the state of football around the family dining table: "It doesn't matter, son. One day it's all going to disappear up its own arse anyway."

Not long from now, it will be difficult to argue with him.”

I fully agree with your logic.

I still prefer Richarlison over Jesus.

At the time it was reported that we bid 13m but his Chinese club whacked another 10m 'prem premium' onto the price and we told them to f'k off..... A year later he goes to Turkey for fuck all.
yeh but if we matched that bid he would have come to us. Even if we matched Napoli's bid later on he would have chosen us.

It was reported numerous times he really wanted to join us.

Mourinhos says we offered 5..they wanted 10...we said no. Nothing to do with English premium.
