As a Dundee United (and Spurs) fan who’s sat at Tannadice and watched as his team gave us 9 in one game without reply, and win his first title at our stadium (a game we actually took a point off them in, and sealed Europe) I can honestly say I’m excited about this on two levels.
One, because it means I no longer have to watch my team regularly take a hiding off his Celtic team. I know some people will say “well, it’s Celtic, they give hidings to every other Scottish team, it’s a tin-pot league, blah, blah, blah”. The first part at least is true, but Ange’s Celtic team is different. At least in previous years you had hope that you could maybe take something from the game, a point or even the very occasional late winner. Under Ange, it’s just a case of how many? You would take a 2 or 3 nil going into the game, his teams are that good, and that ruthless. Watching his Celtic team give mine 9 was a horror show, nearly every goal was identical, winger comes inside, splits the fullback and the centre half, and plays a short cutback across the 6 yard box for a tap in. Watch the highlights, I only managed once, just to torture myself (I walked out after the 4th went in). His team would go on 30+ unbeaten runs where no one would lay a glove on them, they only started dropping a few points this season after they sealed the title, and were on course for something like 109 points till then, before that I think they’d dropped points in like 2 games this season, which even for Celtic is abnormal.
The second reason I’m excited is cause I know he’s gonna get us playing the type of football we all want to see Spurs play. He’s a million miles removed from the two dinosaurs we’ve had in the past 4 years. He will not change his principles for anyone, he wants his teams to play fast, attacking possession based football with inverted fullbacks and midfield runners getting into the box, and constant pressing with his famous motto “We never stop”. He wants his teams to entertain and attack constantly, not just sitting trying to hold onto a 1-0 lead against Everton, a fucking world away from what we’ve been dished up by Conte and José. Give him a bit of time (his first 6 weeks or so at Celtic you could see the players were still trying to adapt to his methods) and I know every single one of you’s is going to love Ange. He’s defo a manager that’ll play football the Spurs way.
