My client is happy to fill in at LB but he sees himself primarily as a centreback. He’d rather learn from van Dijk and Klopp than Romero and Ange.

I think his point with respect to VDV and Liverpool already showing interest is certainly plausible. Hopefully we can land him, but if not Tapsoba and that unpronounceable name from Fulham would still be solid business.
Thé point i was making is that signing a player is not a one-way interaction. This isn’t just pay the money and use one of those grabby hands to pick out the toy you want. Pay 30m and get to choose from any of the 30m players… pay 40m and choose from any of the 40m players…
The players also have agency and will choose the best deal for them.
Insisting that we have to sign player X or Y is always a losing strategy because players have choice and may have reasons to prefer other similar clubs.
A winning strategy is to scout effectively for TYPES of player and have lists of 5 or 6 players who can all fill that role in our team.
I know there’s been a bit of bitterness in this thread but that’s all it comes down to. And there’s plenty of room to show ambition in that but let’s not pretend these deals are simple. We’re dealing with human beings who have complex motivations.

Of course not. The only point I was making is we can’t pretend that a proper team would just go out and buy both players and that failing to do so means we’re deficient.

But that was inconsistent with the entitled post that I originally responded to (saying a real team would just sign both). Just showing some ambition isn’t enough. You have to negotiate complex deals with human beings who have their own interests.
If we have offered £30mil, our next bid will be £31m
I´m saying we desperately need CB´s, and if it will cost us £80m - £90m to get both, so be it, we can afford it!!
What makes you think they're not being picked to start?
They may see more merit in getting a starting berth with us than a bit part for the likes of City.

As long as they've been scouted well then I'd be quite happy with that. Smart signings are far better than statement signings.
Well that's the problem, isn't it? Scouting has been rubbish for a while. Seems to have improved, maybe, over the last couple of windows but that's yet to be established as a trend.
That was the whole premise of the discussion - signing two in demand centrebacks. Once you sign the first, signing the second is harder because one of the things players are looking for (minutes) becomes harder to obtain.
Note: in demand players, by definition, have choice. You are therefore competing against other clubs. Our competitive advantage is weak at the moment.
