Todibo had disagreements regarding 1st team football at Barca (which is why they sold him). He's good, but I don't know what has changed for him to be ready to live Nice to be a 3rd choice CB. One of those "won't believe it until I see it" types of rumors.

Probably doesn't see himself as 3rd choice. Maybe he won't be.

if he's good enough to push Romero or VDV out the starting 11, what a player we would have on our books.

I've been a subscriber to the 'refs hate us since liverpool' conspiracy theory.

So, out of curiosity, I went through and looked at all the cards we've had since the start of the season.

4 1 3 3 6/(7 for SHU) 4 5/(7 for LIV) 3 2 1 5 (Romero red against CHE) 3 0 4 3 1 6 (Biss got red against NFO)

(4 1 3 3 6 4 5 3 2 1 5 3 0 4 3 1 6)

* I've counted straight reds as two cards. I didn't cater for a straight red following a yellow.
** We usually are only 1 or 2 cards better or worse off than our opposition and that has been consistent since the start, no change that I can see. I don't think there were any cases where we were 3 or more cards different from our opp.

The bottom line is that we've done no worse, card-wise since before LIV. We've generally been carded a lot this season.

But, despite this evidence, I still think we've been on the receiving end of some shocking decisions and that doesn't show up in this data. We've also been learning how to do the high-press and that's resulting in a lot of reckless challenges, so I'm sure our oppos feel the same way about some of the stuff we 'get away' with.

EDIT: Here's a chart with moving average for reference.

Worth noting that Ange has played a 3241 previously. Maybe with another first team level centre back, this is another string to add to his bow?

Its also future planning. Who knows what van de Ven will be like after his second hamstring injury in two years... Maybe Romero will be sold out in a few years time for massive profit when we feel someone like Dorrington or Vuckovic are capable of stepping up as third choice...

We're also the most fouled team.

Think I saw something that said Romero has only committed 12 fouls all season. He's got 4 yellows and 1 red.... Yet someone like Gallagher has committed 30+ fouls and has 1 yellow and 1 red to his name.

Now that obviously doesn't take into account the types of challenges made. But I do think we're harshly punished. Some of the tackles Forest were putting in on us and getting away with before Udogies yellow was quite simply a joke.

And it happens each week.

The issue is that fouls that are not called don't show up in stats. We concede a "fair" number of fouls and our opposition may also concede a similar number to us, but that doesn't say if they got those same number of fouls for a far higher number of actual foul play.

E.g. Yates getting away with murder in the last game.

This one is hard to analyse statistically.

Would be a cool signing. You'll always have injuries, rotation and suspension, he'd play lots of games. . Also might make VDV a good lb option if Udogie is injured/suspended, or even Romero rb on occasion.

I was a fan of CGs at Palace thought I haven't watched much of Chelsea this year.

Ultimately we all want the manager backed, and if he is getting players he actually likes then no one can argue that isn't happening regardless of our opinion of said player.
That's the long and the short of it really.

Thinking about it, if the £40M mooted is true, there's not really an English tax being applied. We paid more than that for a Dutch defender who'd only had 1 season in German top flight under his belt, so paying £40M for a proven, HG player isn't as off the charts as it first seemed.

If his addition makes the machine purr that much better then grand.

I wouldn't put him in the first 11 if everyone is fit and playing well, I think there is better value to be had else where.

Perhaps, but the value to you and the value to the manager might not align.

We don't truly know the exact profile of player Ange is looking for and if reports about our new scouting system are believed then we are relying on a data driven model that may throw out some surprises.

Todibo is a funny profile player to sign when we appear to have an established CB pairing - you'd think he'd be looking to move for first XI football pretty much guaranteed.

That's for Ange to work out but could be a good sign of what we're looking to build over the next couple of windows (and beyond)
If he's not up to backing himself to take that spot then do we really want him?

If he wants guarantees then there are plenty of 'lesser' clubs who'd pander to him.

More importantly the value to the manager and the value to the chairman might not align, because 50m would make him one of our most expensive signings ever. In which case, Ange loses.

We can't have it both ways.

To build a squad the manager wants we have to spend money.

If it's not enough money, people complain about net spend, if it's too much money (in said fans' eyes) then we are spending too much.

Either we want to back the manager or not - if we do, then the fee should not be an issue - especially if we are paying slightly over the odds, which when we don't it's a case of 'just pay the money and get it done'

I agree, I was just checking the only facts we have. I've seen enough to know refs are a) at best, shit at their jobs and b) at worst, letting teams kick lumps out of us.

The fact that Biss got sent off for that tap on the knee when we see Caicedo stay on for a lion-esque mauling is bullshit. Yates and Cash are other examples.
