Transfers January Transfer Thread 2024

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Why do they always go with the line about selling clubs wanting to sell for more than a previous player?

As if that's relevant at all to the value of this player..
I think CDK is their record sale so they're probably using that transfer as a yardstick, "if CDK is worth x Nusa must be worth y". It's probably made up press bullshit anyway but I could see clubs applying this sort of logic, we as fans do it all the time.

Tbh I'd love to know what clubs generally agree on as methods to calculate transfer value. Transfermarkt almost always calculate the value lower.

I feel like Transfermarkt value is pretty accurate to what the selling club would want if they were actively marketing the player, book value of a player the club actually doesn't want to sell is always going to be sigfnificantly higher than that. If you look at Winks' transfermarkt value as an example of a player we recently willingly sold, it's 12m euros, so roughly £10m which is precisely what we sold him for.

Blackburn want 20m+ for Wharton if reports that they rejected 17.5m from palace are correct. That’s not cheap for an 18 year old kid.

Compare that to 50m for a much more certain and experienced Gallagher from a direct rival and personally I think that deal looks better.
It all comes down to how much you trust your scouting.

Everyone kinda knew 25m for Alex Scott would turn out to look like peanuts in a couple seasons. Plenty of other examples where it's just obvious.

If we think Wharton is in that bracket then we should be comfortable paying it.

Gone are the days of getting a high potential HG player who is already performing well in the Championship for 10-15m.

It is thought that Eddie Howe would like to recruit a midfielder before January ends, especially given Joe linton is now injured.

And that desire could have a significant ripple effect across the Premier League.

Tottenham are also thought to be keeping an eye on any opportunities that could arise in the midfield market, having shown interest in Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher.

And given the shock news that Newcastle are now interested in a deal for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, things could really get moving.

Newcastle are considering a loan move for Tottenham player Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
Journalist Aaron Stokes uncovered the news today whilst speaking on The Chronicle.

Stokes said he’s been hearing rumours of Newcastle’s interest in Tottenham midfielder Hojbjerg, a loan move that would look achievable.

He said: “There’s one name that’s been sort of bubbling and rumbling away under the surface for the last couple of weeks and that is Hojbjerg at Tottenham, apparently on loan.

“I’m not sure, I don’t have that confirmed that that is the case, but that is you know, a deal that you could hope Newcastle could strike.

“A player out of favour at a top six club, who they might be able to do a favourable loan deal for.

“But I’ve just sat here and said I think Trippier and Wilson and Almiron will all be at the club this time next week.

“That means, you know, I can’t then say they’re going to go and spend money because I just think until they get players off the books it’s going to be a very, very careful month.”

January is heating up
As mentioned, it does seem as if a move for Tottenham’s Hojbjerg would be very dependent on Newcastle’s ability to sell a player or two.

But should that be the case, then Spurs may consider £20m Hojbjerg’s departure on loan as green light to pursue their key targets.

Perhaps a deal for Conor Gallagher could then be reignited.

Of course, it also seems as if Newcastle could go down a different route if they are able to achieve the sales mentioned.

Out of favor? Loan?

:sonlol::levylol::porrosmile:

Who is this Joe Linton fella that's hurt himself?

Wonder if we could offer Chelsea PEH and a few quid for Gallagher.
Means they get "paid" but we don't fix their FFP issue.
I reckon he'd take that move

Hog to Newcastle makes a lot of sense.

I'm not going to pretend he's (Bissouma) been perfect, I've said myself he blows hot and cold, and yes the discipline issues need sorting out, but he's far from the only member of our squad with disciplinary issues now, is he? It's not like Romero has never been sent off or been responsible for an opposition goal, is it? Whatecer you personally decide Ange will or won't do is by the by, I don't see him playing players out of position (which putting Bentancur or Sarr at 6 would definitely be) so I think it's between Sarr and Bentancur for the 8 when everyone is fit and healthy. I don't feel the need to continue talking on the matter because come February we will find out whether you or I are right when Ange picks his first XI with everyone back.

"Ange doesn't play players out of position" - agreed. But #6 is one of the two positions for Bentancur, so it is not needed in that context. It is not under discussion - Ange has been coach in games where Benta has started at #6.

Just like playing Son on ST or LW - neither is playing him out of position. Or like playing Deki on #10 or on RW is not playing them out of position.

Bentancur is not as good at 6 as Bissouma, simple fact. Biss is a very tidy tackler and his ball carrying under pressure is significantly better than Bentancur's. This is very important if you are going to play out from the back, most of the teams in the league are playing a mid block these days so you need someone who isn't going to shit the bed and give the ball away cheaply in a dangerous area, and for that Biss is your man. Bentancur is a much tidier passer of the ball and has fantastic off the ball work, making himself available for passes and progressing the team in the middle 3rd of the pitch, he is not shy of a tackle but defnitely not as proficient as Bissouma. Bentancur also seems to me like he has the potential going forward to be a goalscoring 8 in the Gerrard mould, he had a good run of goalscoring form prior to his ACL and scored against United on his first proper start back (if you discount the Villa game with the early injury). Again, that's a trait that would be wasted by confining him to the 6 role.

I don't really think Biss has "shit the bed" in any sense either, he has had games where he hasn't been as good, granted, but I can't think of one performance this season that had me with my head in my hands whimpering softly in the corner as I did many a time last season watching the Skippbjerg nightmare.

Mostly right from Mostly wrong.
