Transfers January Transfer Thread 2024

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I know that the details are murky, but does Chelsea have to sell to make FFP work? I know they have to sell to buy, but I’m curious how bad their situation actually is. They just don’t seem all that desperate.

£815m spent by PL clubs January 2023. This January that number to date is around £47m. We are the biggest spenders in the smallest spend January in recent times with many needing to sell before they can buy.

I guess this is what being prudent with your money long term can give to a football club.

Opinion only, but I 100% think Nusa gets done (with loan back)

Sell Hojberg and sign Wharton and that’s an extremely good window.

still want Eze though…!

And as we don't need to sell before buying (as we have a squad of 23 and therefore 2 slots available for new players) we are in great shape for the last 7 and a half days of the window.
Pretty sure 2 out, maybe 3. 3 in, def, mid and AM.

I think Ornsrein has been fed something from the Chavski camp tbh.
They desperately put out the information about Broja being available for transfer in the hope that someone would buy. Nobody bit so now they're trying to sell Gallagher.
This is why any deal on any chav player will likely go down to the wire/last day. (Unless we are stumping up the reported £50m, which might be too good to turn down if it makes them FFP-compliant).

Yeah, look, in terms of the rest of the transfer window, I was really pleased that the initial objectives we had in our head, which were someone in at centre-half and someone in the forward positions, that we ticked those off pretty early.

And it’s not just been that we did them early, but they’re two guys who have really benefitted from having 10 days in the building with us, training, adjusting and all that. Both Timo and Radu are both in a really good place to help us going forward.

As for what happens with the rest of it going forward, as I said last time, we’re always alert and doing work and if we can improve the squad we’ll look to do that. And if there are potentially any outgoings, we’re ready for that depending on what happens.

I think we’re in a decent place where the anxiety going into it and thinking where did we really need to help the squad, especially in this period, I think we’re in a good place now.

It all comes down to how much you trust your scouting.

Everyone kinda knew 25m for Alex Scott would turn out to look like peanuts in a couple seasons. Plenty of other examples where it's just obvious.

If we think Wharton is in that bracket then we should be comfortable paying it.

Gone are the days of getting a high potential HG player who is already performing well in the Championship for 10-15m.
I agree - and also gone are the days where a high performing English 23 year old in the PL goes for 30m.

45-50m is cheaper than many other English or HG talents (Eze, Olise, Colwill, Ben White…). That’s just the going rate for the reduced risk.

I don’t know who I prefer honestly but it doesn’t seem to me that one is obviously a better deal than the other.

Sounds to me like he's been forced to say that, reckon he's had a rift with the board and he's just playing lip service for the time being.

And the genuine threat of being deducted points if Clubs fail to comply with the regulations that they signed up to (points deductions are far more serious for Clubs than fines, as fines are often factored in as a cost of business e.g. to get a £30m fine is a no brainer if it keeps you in the PL (++£100m in revenue) or gets you CL football (++£50-£100m), a points deduction is a genuine threat to obtaining PL revenue stream or CL revenue stream.
