Transfers January Transfer Thread 2024

Would he be guaranteed anything at Brentford? He would have to compete for a start with Mbuemo and Wissa wouldn't he? Unless they are going full Ossie with their selection.

Probably more likely to get minutes there than here though, in the short term. By the time he has matured, if he is as good as people seem to think a bigger club will come knocking.

I get why the kid made the decision he did. It's actually a rather mature call.

Chelsea after Wharton apparently.

Winstanley is in the market for even more talent, despite spending heavily on midfielders and Chelsea may be open to a buy and loan back arrangement.

Rovers snubbed an £18.5million offer from Palace this week and want up to £25m, although they could take that in a down payment and extras.

Wharton — who signed a five-year deal at Ewood Park last month — will also want to know his career path, so Chelsea need to be persuasive and any plans to loan him out next season would not appeal.

Palace are unlikely to go higher than their offer of £15m plus £3.5million in add-ons for Wharton and are already making inquiries about alternatives

The bigger clubs will obviously pay the highest fees.

But if say Real Madrid decide they an afford to buy Osimehn for say £100m , there are maybe only half a dozen clubs (maximum) who could afford to pay a big fee as and when Madrid want to sell him on..... and I don't see the others wanting to buy that same player for a huge fee so player cannot move until his contract runs down.

So there might be one or two players on mega fees at a top club, but even they are squeezed by sustainability rules - as Barcelona have now found

Barca is a very different situation though. They are their own special type of mess.

Mas que un mess.

agreed but it shows what happens if you pay big transfer fees and pay high wages often enough

Outbid everyone (including us) to buy Rafinha from Leeds and paid top wages ....... not to play him that much either.

Definition of NOT sustainable ..... and that's what the sustainability rules are designed to stop

Olise seems like a logical target. No pissing about. That’s the level we need.
Exactly this. Maddison was ready and so is Olise. He can play wide or centrally he'd be my number one target. We now need guaranteed quality. Olise and Sesko get rid of Gil, PEH, Locelso, Sessingnon, Parrot. If we added them two gave the development role to Donnelly ( forgoing a Wharton) I think we'd be a match for near anyone.

We already have our right sided player, like it or not Johnson was the long term investment to play out there and the club aren't gonna spend £70m+ for a player to play in the same position after already splashing £50m on that position a year before.

Yup.

I don't like it and before he signed I wasn't excited by Johnson but it is true and I do see why Ange wanted Johnson. He will come good. Gordon looked a total waste in his first season at Newcastle, now look at him.

But Olise can also cover Maddison so he'd still be a good buy especially if we get ECL. Sesko* because deep down I see Richarlison in Saudi with Neymar and his sister. Werner isn't going to be retained.

I don’t think we’re good enough up front and we can’t keep relying on Sonny as he ages.
Other than squad depth, this is the obvious upgrade this summer although I think we’ll be relatively quiet.
Would love Kvara and a solid striker though.

100000% this.

Other than Son, none of our front 3 are elite level. Richy is shaping up nicely for an Ange #9 but he's about running and finishing. Deki and Johnson are still young and both have high ceilings but the most obvious place to push for a really elite player is LWF. The fact that Son can play #9 as well makes it the perfect place to recruit.

Werner was a prudent pick up in January but unless we are selling Solomon and Werner ends up a squad piece, there is no reason to make him permanent.

We were gazumped. We've been watching him since last summer, and we dawdled so fucking long, a little team like Brentford came in and did the deal.
Grealish all over again. In a year or 2 this kid will be moving on again for money well out of our reach.
Probably to Brighton as the one of the other unrestricted-by-ffp teams. They'll blow us out of the water with a £35m offer for him.

It's comparible to Man Utd losing out on a transfer target to Oldham.
